MeinMMO asked you the question of which football anime is better – the great football stars with Captain Tsubasa or The Kickers. One of the two animes clearly prevailed over the other.
The great football stars and The Kickers were two animes that were broadcast in Germany in the 1990s. Both series are about the ball sport, but MeinMMO wanted to know from you which of the two series you prefer.
These are the results: 1,869 people participated in the survey. Only one vote could be cast to determine the more popular football anime. And indeed, one of the two series prevailed against the other.
The two football animes achieved the following results:
- Rank 1: The great football stars (69%, 1,289 votes)
- Rank 2: The Kickers (31%, 580 votes)

Some of you thought that both series are great animes. User Patsipat stated that the series had even merged into one over time. However, The great football stars ultimately came out on top. In the comments, it became clear that you associate the animes with special shooting techniques:
- Borkfinger still remembers the topspin and the tiger shot from The great football stars well. Therefore, his vote went to Captain Tsubasa.
- MeinMMO editor-in-chief Leya Jankowski celebrates the devil’s trio from The Kickers. We can guess which anime she gave her vote to.
- Frost voted for The Kickers because he remembered the legendary throw-in by Sascha. However, Captain Tsubasa was just as good for him.

What are The great football stars? At the center of the anime is Captain Tsubasa. His real name is Tsubara Ohzora, and he wants to become a Japanese world champion in football. In the anime, we follow his journey from a hobby player at the local FC Nankatsu to a professional player at the World Cup.
The anime was already broadcast in Japan in 1983, but in Germany, the series was only seen in 1995 on RTL 2. The production of the anime was handled by Toei Animation.
What are The Kickers? In this anime, we experience the football career of Gregor. The boy switches to a new school and meets the Kickers there. They are a football team that has not won a single game anymore. Gregor gives the Kickers new courage and celebrates their first successes with them.
The anime aired in Japan in 1986, but it was only seen in Germany in 1992. This means that The Kickers aired three years later than The great football stars in Japan, but three years earlier in Germany.
The story of The Kickers has been completed for several decades. With Captain Tsubasa, the situation is more complicated, as the story no longer continues in manga form: After over 40 years, the popular manga “Captain Tsubasa” ends, but the story goes on
