A bitter message for all Mass Effect fans. The studio Humanoid Origin is bankrupt and thus a game will never be released.
One of the most promising indirect successors to Mass Effect will never see the light of day. For the studio founded by Casey Hudson is bankrupt and development of the game will be completely halted. The reason for this is an unexpected problem with financing.
So far, there are only teasers of the actual new
Mass Effect:
Who is Casey Hudson? Long-time RPG fans will likely know Casey Hudson, as he worked at BioWare for a long time. His most famous work is probably the original trilogy of Mass Effect, for which he served as Game Director. However, he left the studio in 2020 and founded “Humanoid Origin” the following year – a new development studio.
What was the problem? The answer is simple: money. There was an unexpected drop in funding, although details about how this came to be are not known.
On LinkedIn, a statement read:
Earlier today, we informed our team that Humanoid Origin will be closing. Despite all efforts to protect the company from the larger challenges of the industry, an unexpected drop in funding has made it impossible for us to continue our work.
We deeply regret that we will not be able to complete our new sci-fi universe. However, our main concern right now is with our team, and we are working to support everyone in finding new employment.
During our time together, the team made incredible progress and demonstrated that they are capable of producing fantastic work while fostering a culture of fun and creativity. We thank everyone for their talent, courage, and friendship.
Thank you to everyone who accompanied us on this journey.
What was already known about the game? Basically not much so far, as there has not yet been an official announcement, nor has an exact title for the game been decided. However, art pieces have been released over the past years that were supposed to give a first impression of the game’s style.
What will happen with the project? The game seems to be completely done, and development will not be continued. Of course, it is not excluded that something new might be built out of the remnants of the game in the future – but that is uncertain. And that is somehow fitting for an indirect Mass Effect successor.
Another project that Mass Effect fans are waiting for is Exodus.
