At a press event for Path of Exile: Mirage, the head of the game discussed the competition from Diablo and explained why fans should not expect a new class anytime soon.
Who is it about? At a press appointment for the new season of Path of Exile, Mirage, PoE head Mark Roberts and lead developer “Octavian” answered questions about their ARPG.
After Diablo 2 got a new class after 25 years, we wanted to know when it would be time for Path of Exile again.

Outdated systems block a new class
What did the developers respond? The developers of Path of Exile played with open cards and explained that it is currently not technically possible to bring a new class into the game. The game’s “Character Skinning” system is very outdated, which currently poses problems for the developers when transferring the skins to Path of Exile 2.
A new class in the game would turn everything on its head. The developers are currently working to resolve this blockage by improving systems, thanks to Path of Exile 2, but they are still not able to simply bring a new class into the ARPG.
So no new class in Path of Exile? However, the developers clearly added that there are “constantly new classes” in Path of Exile. The starting classes are now almost just different starting points on the skill tree, as players choose abilities and builds themselves anyway.
They emphasized that they want to add new expansion classes in the future that would feel like a new class to them. Additionally, there will constantly be new updates with new skills. This time, it is a build that focuses on Holy Energy and Hammers. This is already essentially a completely new class due to the changes, even if it is not selected at launch.
Nonetheless, the developers respond with the motto: Never say never. So it is very possible that a new class in Path of Exile might await us in a few years, although it will take some time until then.
