Which crossovers should come to Final Fantasy XIV? The director of the MMORPG gave a very clear answer.
Which crossovers does the director of FFXIV want? It is no secret that game developers are often fans of certain video games, which can also be from other companies.
MeinMMO and the guys from Gamebyte asked director Yoshida during the Shadowbringers press tour which games he would like to see as crossovers in FFXIV.
His answer came like a shot from a gun: World of Warcraft and Diablo!
The head of Final Fantasy XIV is, according to his own statement, “a huge Blizzard fanboy.” He has also attended Blizzcon several times in the past.
In an interview with Gamebyte, he even jokingly said:
If Blizzard ever came to me and said, “Oh hey, we want you to take over as the lead developer for Diablo 4,” I would drop everything and go to Blizzard.
What crossovers would Yoshida like to do? When asked about a third game for a crossover with Final Fantasy XIV, the director had some difficulties. Our condition was that the game should not be from Square Enix.
I haven’t really thought about it yet. It would be cool if it were a game that is completely unexpected. Something players could never imagine. That’s really hard! Although I knew the first two immediately.
Assassin’s Creed would be an option according to him, but the franchise has already had several crossovers with other games and would therefore not be surprising enough.
Star Wars could perhaps be an option, but Yoshida believes that fans of the franchise would then say, “That doesn’t look anything like Star Wars!”.
The head of FFXIV also didn’t want to just choose a third Blizzard game, even though he is a fanboy. In the end, however, he did have an answer:
Oh, I got it! Smash Brothers! With Smash Brothers, we could bring Mario and Link to Final Fantasy XIV. Or Legend of Zelda! Such a “Legend of Zelda” MMO would be great.
Whether these crossovers are actually realistic and will happen one day is still up in the air. Such collaborations would definitely be interesting.
