The end of the Dawntrail expansion has left MMORPG fans with many unanswered questions. However, in an interview, Naoki Yoshida, the director of Final Fantasy XIV, clarifies one of the many questions. There were already some theories about it.
Which question did Yoshida clarify? In the interview with The Gamer, the editor wanted to talk about the area “Living Memory,” which has been newly introduced with Dawntrail. Yoshida explained what the development team had in mind for the city. Casually, he clarified one of the biggest fan theories:
When we were thinking about the concept of searching for the city of gold, we considered how we could express that in the story. […] We felt that we had to make it authentic, and we had to do a proper job, or else the thoughts of the people living in the ninth reflection would not be conveyed correctly.
In the end, Yoshida casually revealed that the people from Alexandria who end up in the Living Memory after death come from the ninth shard world. This information was kept secret in the DLC. It was only known that the people from Alexandria presumably come from some shard world, but not from which one.

The shard worlds in Final Fantasy XIV
What did fans think so far? A popular theory in the Reddit forum included that Alexandria comes from one of the shard worlds that have not yet united with the origin world. Currently, there are still four worlds about which we don’t know what happened to them.
The permanent storm in Alexandria indicated that the associated shard world is currently in an end phase of the world. According to the theory, the shard world is therefore on the verge of uniting with the origin world or it may have even been possible for Alexandria to survive the unification.
What are the shard worlds? When Hydaelyn, the will of light, banished her counterpart Zodiark, the will of darkness, to the moon, the origin world was torn apart. This resulted in the creation of 13 other parallel worlds, the so-called shard worlds.
Each of the shard worlds has its own inhabitants, who are connected to each other through the origin world. Some of them we could see in Shadowbringers, as the DLC takes place in the first shard world.
7 of the original 13 shard worlds have already reunited with the origin. So far, players have only encountered the first and the 13th shard world. There are still 4 worlds left to explore.
Although the saga surrounding Hydaelyn and Zodiark ended with Endwalker, it could be that it will continue with some hints. Yoshida revealed that there could be a reunion with the Ascians: Head of Final Fantasy XIV hints at a reunion with your greatest enemies
