The Butcher, better known by his original name “The Butcher”, has been a legend since the first Diablo game. In Diablo 4, he has caused fear and terror since the release – until he was only mockingly laughed at in Season 4. A player has now discovered that the slaughter axe is still sharp, causing surprise.
Who is the opponent?
- The Butcher is a boss from Diablo 1 and is known for his iconic line: “Ah, fresh meat!” In Diablo 4, he appears randomly in dungeons and ambushes unsuspecting players.
- The boss is so deadly because he deals significant damage, pulls players in with his hook, and runs faster than they do. He has millions of players on his conscience, with 5 million alone in the first weekend after release.
- Since Season 4, however, he is seen more as a laughingstock, as fans claim that not much of his original deadliness remains. This became a downfall for a hardcore player.
This is how the Butcher seeks revenge: A user wanted to bring his Huntress to level 100 in hardcore mode (via Reddit). After 23 hours and 49 minutes, he was already at level 99, had collected over 76 million gold, and then died – to the Butcher.
In hardcore mode, death is permanent, so you only have one life. This means: The almost 24 hours invested in the character are now simply gone. The user does not reveal exactly how he came to this defeat.
However, he is causing surprise in the community. Players wonder how such a thing can still happen, as the Butcher has long ceased to be a threat, especially not at level 99.
With the new expansion Vessel of Hatred, we see new enemies in Diablo 4 and an old foe returns:
Power Creep makes the Butcher a non-opponent
Since Blizzard overhauled the entire game with Season 4, characters have become much stronger. Absurd numbers arise, some are running around with half a million health points or more and dealing multiple times that in damage.
Due to the many buffs and enhancements of characters, especially old content has become far too easy, some content has even become completely useless. This phenomenon is called “Power Creep” in gaming. This is most evident with world bosses, who sometimes die before they fully spawn – or with the Butcher.
Neither have received buffs since the release of Diablo 4. Dying to the Butcher is therefore considered very unfortunate by players on Reddit. Especially since an encounter with him seems to be significantly rarer than before:
“From 1 to 99, I didn’t see a single Butcher. Literally, when I reached 100 in a nightmare dungeon at level 64, he showed up. I didn’t even register that there was a Butcher until he was almost done. My minions just devoured him alive. I honestly have never died to him. But I’ve also never played Hunter…”

World bosses will be significantly stronger with Season 5, but as far as we know, nothing is planned for the Butcher at the moment. However, the strength and especially the balancing of classes has been a topic among fans for a while.
However, one boss that has bravely held the fort since release is Lilith. Although she has been in the game from the start, players are failing against her in droves, and those who defeat her usually only do so with absurdly strong OP builds. But even then, the mother of Sanctuary knows how to defend herself: Player attempts 72 times to kill the most annoying boss, dies at 0 HP
