A secret of the Dragon Age series revolves around a unique crossbow named Bianca. Its origin and especially the reason for its name has never been resolved. We will clarify the mystery for you that the video game series did not uncover.
What kind of crossbow is this? Bianca is the crossbow of Varric, a companion who first appears in Dragon Age 2. Varric is skilled with his crossbow and usually only needs a single shot to take down his opponent.
He often shouts things like: “Bianca, darling, show yourself!” Varric talks to his crossbow as if it were alive, and the community has perceived the weapon as a standalone character.
Although Bianca is so present in Dragon Age and especially in Varric’s life, the reason for her name has never really been explained. At least not in the video games.
In Dragon Age 2, she was introduced for the first time, but instead of unveiling her backstory in Dragon Age: The Veilguard, the game initially had a different fate planned for the weapon: This was heavily discussed by the community back then under the gameplay trailer.

Bianca’s backstory and the origin of her name
Where does the crossbow come from? The DLC Dragon 2: Legacy first provided a backstory for the crossbow. It was made by Gerav, with whom Varric was in contact at that time. Gerav had to be killed due to the Darkspawn infection. Since then, Varric has called the crossbow his own.
Why is it called Bianca? It is only in the comics Dragon Age: Until We Sleep and Dragon Age: Inquisition that the origin of the crossbow’s name is explained.
The actual Bianca was a long-time love of Varric. She was a dwarf, a blacksmith, who could not be with Varric due to the dwarf mafia.
Although Gerav forged the crossbow, he was unable to make it into a functional weapon. Varric brought the weapon to Bianca, who managed to turn it into a dangerous weapon in no time.
However, Varric and Bianca had to keep the crossbow a secret so they would not be forced to make more dangerous weapons.
Varric is likely so proud of the accomplishment of his beloved that he named the weapon after her.
