The RTX 4090 from Nvidia is currently the fastest graphics card. It is so powerful that you can even crack passwords with it. An expert shows how and uses not just one, but almost a dozen of them.
After the presentation of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4090, there are now also the first independent tests of the RTX 4090. And they show how fast this new GPU from Nvidia is. At the current time (10/18/22), you cannot get a graphics card with more performance.
An expert has now shown another way to use the performance of the RTX 4090. He has tested with a handful of graphics cards how quickly passwords can be cracked. And the result is impressive.
With 8 graphics cards, expert cracks 200 billion combinations in under 1 hour
What did he do? Sam Crole is a software developer and security researcher, and he tested how much performance the RTX 4090 can deliver.
The well-known password cracking tool Hashcat in version 6.2.6 was used. This allows targeted attacks on hashes. The program is mainly used by security researchers, and Sam Crole was one of the developers behind this tool.
In the test, 8 “GeForce RTX 4090” graphics cards were able to crack a hashed password in 48 minutes, which is quite impressive. The RTX 4090 is therefore twice as fast as the RTX 3090, which until now was said to be the leader.
Theoretically, anyone who has enough money for an RTX 4090 could crack fairly secure access codes in a few days. However, many users spend little time on their passwords or use very simple codes. Here, an RTX 4090 would likely be even faster.
However, there is a disadvantage for the “hacker”: The user needs access to the hashed password.
