Water and technology usually do not get along. A gamer had to experience this recently. According to a reddit post, he broke up with his girlfriend in an unpleasant way. However, she did not hesitate to pour water over her ex-boyfriend’s PC in anger once more.
But the biggest mistake was made by the owner afterwards. He turned on his computer and likely caused a short circuit.
When in contact with water, hardware should be dried
What is the problem now? The gamer explained that he restarted his gaming PC after the water incident. But now his computer crashes every 20 minutes.
Many users from the community explained to him that he should not have turned the gaming PC on again. One user with many upvotes clearly states:
Guys, learn from this … person. Never turn on wet electronics. Your device will likely survive if it has just come into contact with water or soda. Do not turn it on, clean it with 90% or more alcohol, and let it dry thoroughly. Even if it doesn’t look bad, we are talking about small parts that can be easily damaged.
Why don’t water and technology get along? In regular tap water or sparkling water, there are particles called ions, often coming from salts. You cannot see them with the naked eye. These ions make the water conductive (via lenntech.de). Pure water does not occur like this in nature, as there are often ions from salts dissolved in the water in nature.
These particles also cause a short circuit in your device if your phone takes a bath or you pour a glass of sparkling water over your computer. Distilled water is an exception.
If you have spilled not only water but also cola or juice on your hardware, additional problems arise. Because juice and cola contain sugar, which can then deposit on the hardware and damage solder points or sensitive traces.
If you turn on your system now, in the most annoying case, you will have such a short circuit. In the best case, your hardware may still start, but many damages you cannot recognize with the naked eye.
In case of water in the PC: Stay calm
What should I do if water lands on my PC? Stay calm and let things dry first. And especially do not start the PC out of panic because you want to know if everything still works. Because that will likely cause a short circuit in the worst case, damaging your components.
In the next step, you should let your hardware dry. Ideally, you should disassemble your PC and spread the parts out. Then the components can dry faster than in a tight PC case.
But water can damage hardware and components not only. A YouTuber put his gaming PC in an aquarium. Why the hardware does not get damaged, you can read in the following article on MeinMMO:
