What is this scandal about? From April 13 to 14, 2024, the first World Championship for the colorful multiplayer shooter Splatoon 3 took place. In the end, the North American team Jackpot succeeded in five matches against the Japanese competition “Phantom Thief of the Heart”.
However, the members of Jackpot can no longer adorn themselves with the title of world champion. Via X, the Nintendo officials announced that some of the players violated the community guidelines of Splatoon 3 and Nintendo due to their behavior.
As a result, Nintendo is now rescinding the world champion title and the trophies won by the team. The Splashtag banner from the game is also set to be removed with an upcoming update.

Why is the championship being rescinded? Although Nintendo does not specify concrete details about the violations. Several websites report (via Eurogamer, 3djuegos.com), that since June, racist messages from some Jackpot members have been circulating on X, Discord, and Facebook.
In these messages, for example, other players are insulted as monkeys, KKK jokes (Ku Klux Klan, more on Wikipedia) are made, or “White Supremacy” is propagated (which translates to “superiority of whites” in German). A selection of the tasteless posts has been gathered by the user adapt on X.
Delay due to death threat
This is not the first time that the 2024 World Championship of Splatoon 3 is making news due to difficult circumstances. Originally, the event was supposed to take place during Nintendo Live in January. However, that did not happen.
The Nintendo officials had to postpone the event to “ensure the safety of visitors” after receiving a message threatening to “kill people at the venue”.
In April, a 27-year-old man was finally convicted of having sent that death threat (and 38 others) using Nintendo’s online inquiry form. But all of this should not stop you from trying out Splatoon 3. A MeinMMO author even crowned the Switch title as the best shooter of 2022.
