The new MMO New World by Amazon is at Gamescom 2018. There are already first reports. However, they don’t sound like MMORPG, but rather like a survival MMO with a focus on PvP.
Yesterday a preview for New World went online. However, it was deleted again – apparently, someone broke an embargo and no one is supposed to share any information about New World yet. The article is still available in the Google cache and can be seen by anyone. We will look at what “TechAdvisor” is writing about New World.
What did we know beforehand about New World? We knew almost nothing about “New World.” Only the setting was known: New World was supposed to take place during the colonization of North America.
Similar to the TV series “Sleepy Hollow,” it was supposed to be no historical game, but rather have a large mystery element.
Otherwise, nothing was known about the game: Not even the direction it was going in. Some could dream of a theme park MMORPG. However, these dreams are now being shattered.
This is New World, Amazon’s new sandbox MMO
The most important features of New World:
- There are no classes – the game relies on skills and specializations
- The items fit the time around the 17th century – players find muskets, but also use melee combat and magic
- Players will be able to chop down trees, which will actually fall

Action combat system focusing on PvP and crafting
- Crafting is an important part of New World and is oriented towards games like Rust, Conan Exiles, or ARK Survival Evolved
- The combat system is action-based – players have a stamina bar and can sprint, roll, or block
- PvP is said to be the focus of the game – when you die, the equipment of all players can be looted, it is said
New World – 1000-player sandbox MMO
- In the game, it is then about bringing areas under one’s own control or the control of the guild. You can build on the land
- The game is large, it is said: 1000 players are said to be able to exist in the world
How does all this sound? The author of TechAdvisor describes the game as a “sandbox MMO” and compares it to MMORPGs like Star Wars Galaxies, Ultima Online, Shadowbane, or EVE Online.
From the outside, it currently sounds more like a “large” survival MMO like Conan Exiles, Fallout 76, or Rend.
Anyone hoping that Amazon would serve a classic theme park MMORPG in the new world is likely to be disappointed.
