The 2nd season of the anime Jujutsu Kaisen suffered from a tight schedule. Only now is the finished version available, which was originally intended for release.
What version is this now? Crunchyroll has swapped its version of season 2 of JJK. Originally, the version that aired on Japanese television was shown. From now on, fans can watch the version that is also available on Blu-ray.
In the previous version, a lot was done with dimmers. This is a common practice where strong light effects are reduced. It was introduced after the episode of Pokémon, that caused epilepsy in numerous children.
Additionally, the animation quality has improved. There are new animations as well as corrected character designs that were not present in the original broadcast. This includes, for example, Toji Fushiguro’s corrected face from Episode 15.
Season 2 of Jujutsu Kaisen was a nightmare for animators
Why wasn’t this available earlier? In the past, there have been numerous reports about the catastrophic working conditions at MAPPA, the animation studio behind Jujutsu Kaisen. Numerous animators have spoken out on social media and shared their own experiences.
- Mushiyo reportedly worked hard every day until dawn correcting animations. The management reportedly did not care about the health of the employees and paid them poorly (to read on Otakomu).
- The animation team had so little time that they were unable to finish the episodes. According to NobiliRoccia, Episode 17 of Season 2 was only 30% complete (Reddit).
- Even the director of Episode 16, Itsuki Tsuchigami, spoke out. He expressed gratitude for the hard work of the animators. They produced an incredible achievement under these circumstances. It would not have been possible during normal working hours (to read on Animehunch).
Due to stress and a lack of resources, the episodes probably were not completed. Mappa has presumably caught up now and fans can now watch the version that was intended for the anime from the beginning.
Currently, however, Season 3 of Jujutsu Kaisen is airing on Crunchyroll. This season is affected by significantly fewer quality losses and is very well received by fans.
