If you are looking forward to the upcoming DLC for Destiny 2 and don’t want any spoilers, now would be a good time for a little internet break. Some players have apparently managed to load the updates early onto their PS5 and are flooding the internet with leaks.
What’s happening with Destiny 2? The loot shooter has just experienced what is likely the biggest leak in its history. Almost a week before the release of the major story finale The Final Shape, PS5 players were able to play the entire DLC via the cloud streaming service.
In the Destiny 2 subreddit, there is a code red: Players are warning of spoilers that are currently flooding the internet. In response, Bungie temporarily took the PC servers offline.
Leaks flood the internet
What has been leaked? Reports indicate that numerous contents of The Final Shape are affected, from story cutscenes to weapons and the season pass. Users are currently discussing the extent to which raid mechanics are affected and whether the race for World First could be impacted.
According to Reddit user Soracaz, the entire DLC was playable on May 30, 2024, almost a week before the planned release on June 4. Players are said to have gained access to the campaign and seasonal content and caught a glimpse of raid gear and mechanics. He also warns of “massive story spoilers.”
Another user reassures: No one was able to actually play missions, as the servers were taken offline in the middle of a cutscene. While a raid mod has leaked, the actual mechanics remain unknown and the “World First” race is unaffected (via Reddit).
In the subreddit, a “zero-tolerance policy” for spoilers was introduced due to the extent of the leak.
Destiny Bulletin, a news account for Destiny 2 on X, reported that they were tipped off with all the material in advance. However, they decided against publishing it, as all content is affected (via X).
Spoilers for The Final Shape are also said to be appearing in the ingame chat of Destiny 2 (via X).
Leakers likely snagged a ton of content before the servers went offline
Leak sites on Reddit and X are sharing countless images and videos. An account on X claims to have 3.3 GB of material. Anyone who wants to avoid spoilers should consider taking a break from social media.
There are also claims that the upcoming “Elden Ring” DLC has experienced a similar leak, though we have not been able to confirm this so far.
How did this happen? That is still unknown. Users suspect that it is a vulnerability on Sony’s part. Just in March, a demo of the highly debated PS5 exclusive game Stellar Blade was accidentally launched in the PS Store. Official statements from Sony or Bungie are still pending.
We will keep you updated on further developments.
MeinMMO editor Dariusz was also able to play The Final Shape in advance – but very officially. You can read his first impressions of the grand finale of Destiny 2 here: Destiny 2: I played “The Final Shape” before release – Here are my impressions of the expansion
