The online game Fortnite Battle Royale seems to be falling deeper. The Twitch statistics in January 2020 were as bad as they were last in January 2018. Yet by early February, it is going even further down. Are players waiting for the new Season 2, which finally starts next week?
This is the situation: Fortnite has reached a new low on Twitch. Viewer numbers continue to decline. Are players turning their backs on Fortnite or are they just waiting for the start of the next season?
- In January 2020, Fortnite fell on Twitch and averaged 72,000 viewers.
- Now the viewer numbers have decreased even further in February. From February 1 to February 14, only 65,758 viewers on average watched Fortnite.
With this, Fortnite ranks 4th on Twitch in the category “hours viewed”, behind LoL, the trending game Escape from Tarkov, and the “I’m talking to the chat” category “Just Chatting”.

What were the Twitch numbers like earlier?
- In December 2019, Fortnite still reached 3rd place. An average of 86,000 viewers tuned in.
- The last time Fortnite was in 1st place was in August 2019. Then Fortnite had an average of 120,000 viewers.
- In July 2018, at its peak, there were even 204,000.
What could be the reason?
Season 1 Chapter 2 started in October 2019 and will end on February 20, 2020. After 4 months, it is the longest season that has ever existed in Fortnite.
At the start, players received a new map. But many items and weapons were removed. Fortnite was reset to its early days in 2017 when it was still a simple game.
In the beginning, it was still fun, and players could explore the map. But the season became longer and the battle pass was quickly filled. New updates came rarely and Epic introduced few new items.
For the community, there were only a few reasons left to even log into Fortnite. Only the events that took place in between could briefly bring players back.
No hype from Season 2 so far
This stands out: Normally, interest in Fortnite peaked again at the end of a season:
- with live events, countdowns, and puzzles, Epic stoked the hype around Fortnite
- but this year in February, that is almost completely absent. Fortnite simply continues to fall at the end of the season

Are players waiting for the next season?
This suggests that it will go uphill again soon: It is likely that players are waiting for the next season and have just taken a break.
Since Season 2 starts on February 20, we don’t have to wait much longer. Currently, however, it seems that we will not receive an end event:
- However, there is a theory that we might get a new material type in the next season.
- The new physics system could also raise hopes for a good start.
Even Fortnite star Tfue seems desperately waiting for the next season and says: “This new season needs to hurry up.”
The streamer MontanaBlack created a poll on Twitter. He asked his followers what they were more looking forward to. The options were Battle Royale for Modern Warfare or the new season of Fortnite.
Although fewer players are looking forward to the new season of Fortnite, with 62,000 votes, it shows that 35% of players still have hopes and are waiting.
We will see how Fortnite continues to develop and whether they will achieve a breakthrough again for the next season.
What about you? Are you also waiting for the start of Season 2?
