Many players expect a new map and the end of the old one with the start of Season 3 of Call of Duty: Warzone. On Twitter, the CoD creators are now showing a mini teaser with a date, April 21 at 9 PM, with the hint: “The end is near”. MeinMMO reveals what that could mean.
What does CoD show on Twitter? The official Twitter account of Call of Duty released the following tweet on the evening of April 13:
The short teaser shows the symbol of the zombie event in Battle Royale Warzone along with a date and time: April 21, 12 PM PT. In German time, that is 9 PM on Wednesday next week.
Does CoD Warzone reveal the end of Verdansk here?
What could the tweet mean? There are no concrete statements from the official side about what will happen on this date. Based solely on the developers’ hints, everything points to a finale of the zombie threat in Warzone. In recent weeks, several articles about the increasing zombie threat have been published in the official Call of Duty blog:
- Containment Protocol – Alert rises to 5% (via callofduty.com)
- Containment Protocol – Alert rises to 33% (via callofduty.com)
- Containment Protocol – Alert rises to 66% (via callofduty.com)
Since the emergence of the zombies with the start of Season 2, the NPC enemies have always populated one of the locations on the map Verdansk. However, they have only shifted around and not spread out since then.
In addition to the blogs, Call of Duty sent Warzone items with short letters to various content creators, revealing a hint about the next expansion location. The latest item messages also show the date April 21:
The item (a construction helmet) is labeled with “Verdansk Dam” and the message states: “As soon as the enemies arrive here, we believe that Verdansk is damned”.
The tweet and the items seem to hint that the zombies are ramping up. However, it is still entirely unclear how this will affect Warzone.
Nuke event, zombie event, or something else?
What could happen on the deadline? Nothing is safe so far, except for the connection to the zombies in Warzone. Looking at the developers’ official communication, it seems to lead to a spread of zombies in Verdansk. However, considering leaks and rumors from alleged insiders, many more possibilities arise:
- Zombies continue to spread across the map
- Live event regarding the zombies
- Live event for the destruction of the map Verdansk
- Verdansk is directly destroyed
Especially the hint “the end is near” from the tweet is interpreted by many players and content creators as a sign of the “end of Verdansk”. There have long been persistent rumors that Warzone will get a new map for its big battle royale. The latest developments are prompting many to say – next week the nuke event will come along with the new map.
A recent leak supports this thesis. An unfinished trailer with images, that possibly show a new Warzone map, circulated the net. However, some dataminers suspect that this map will not enter the game until Season 4.
Apart from the new map, there are leaks hinting at a scripted live event similar to the reveal of Black Ops Cold War in Warzone. Back then, there was a special game mode that sent you on a few missions in Verdansk and presented the first trailer of the new CoD at the end.
Additionally, the new Season 3 starts the morning after the deadline. The event could take place in the evening for a few hours, and the new season would also come with a new map the next morning. Perhaps Warzone will go completely down for a few hours – similar to Fortnite with their black hole.
What will actually happen will likely only be seen on the deadline. It’s possible that the zombies will just spread, changing the dynamics in the standard “Battle Royale” games a bit. So far, you can only trigger the NPC undead through a machine in the game. A permanent spread and presence, as in the spiritual predecessor “Blackout”, seems just as possible, as the introduction of a new map.
So it means once again: wait and see. But at least this time there is a date we can look forward to.
