The upcoming MMO shooter The Division aims to steal a title from Destiny according to Ubisoft.
When Destiny launched in 2014, it immediately took a title from Ubisoft. Its shooter “Watch Dogs” held the record for the most successful release of a new franchise until then. Destiny surpassed it and claimed the title for itself.
Now, two years later, it seems that Ubisoft wants to reclaim the title. At least that is what they are aiming for. During yesterday’s financial report, Ubisoft’s CEO Yves Guillemont stated: The Division exceeded all expectations in the closed beta. The Division is set to become one of the biggest launches of a new brand in the history of the video game industry.
Destiny launched on Xbox One, PS4, PS3, and Xbox 360. The Division will not cater to the “old consoles” PS3 and Xbox 360 anymore, but it will be available for PC – and Xbox One and PS4 should now be in significantly more living rooms than back then. It could be exciting.
Destiny is said to have 25 million players who played for 3 billion hours
Interestingly, no one reveals the exact sales figures. Some journalists have already taken to the fun of describing Destiny’s success with as many words as possible without ever saying “This is how much we sold.” Back in 2014, it was said that games worth 500 million USD were “delivered.” The latest figure from yesterday indicates that Destiny has 25 million registered players who have spent 3 billion hours in the game.

There is always a lot of PR involved with such goals and figures. Nevertheless, it will be exciting to see if Ubisoft can reclaim the title of “best launch of a new franchise” after two years. The fact that the closed beta went so well is already a good sign that they have captured the players’ interest.
