PC gamers seem to be turning away from The Division lately, if the Steam player numbers are to be believed.
Through the website Steamcharts.com, one can see how many players each Steam game had on average per day over a certain period. For The Division, a rather grim picture emerges on Steamcharts. While in March at release there were still over 65,000 players active on average – peaking at more than 113,000 players – this number has steadily declined over the past months. This results in a drop from 2.1 million players at launch to now around 143,000 players total.
Decreasing Player Numbers
In April, there were still just over 26,000 players, peaking at nearly 55,000. In May, an average of around 9,800 players were recorded, with peaks of 22,000. In the past 30 days, around 8,000 players have been recorded. On the official Steam website, as of today, it can be read that the player count for The Division is around 4,000 players. Ubisoft’s MMO shooter is currently ranked 38th among the most played Steam games.
However, one must also consider that The Division is not only played on Steam. Many gamers only use Ubisoft’s UPlay account. However, there are no figures available for this. The console players are also not reflected in these numbers.
Moreover, it should be noted that for almost all online games, there is a drop in player numbers after the first month. Many have played through the content and quickly reached the maximum level, waiting for extensive content updates. Others may not have enjoyed the game, which is why they no longer play. One reason for the PC version could also be the cheating issue, which Massive now intends to tackle severely.
Nevertheless, it is completely normal to see a decline in player numbers. The numbers will be interesting when major paid content updates are released.
It’s not that bad
A similar phenomenon can also be seen in World of Warcraft. Player numbers are slowly but steadily declining, and when a new addon is released, they spike again temporarily. Therefore, one should not worry too much about The Division just yet, also because these are only the numbers for the PC version. The MMO also has a large player base on PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
