Ubisoft made an interesting statement during an investors’ conference. It could involve The Division and a possible Year 2.
Currently, major software publishers are holding “Earning Calls”. There, they present their plans for the upcoming year.
Ubisoft was also involved. Their CEO Yves Guillemont announced that four AAA games are planned for the period from April 1, 2017, to March 31, 2018. One of them will be “South Park: The Fractured but Whole”. The other three are not yet revealed by Ubisoft.
It is interesting to note that they have decided to expand an existing successful game instead of releasing a new title in the franchise, as was originally planned.
Ubisoft focuses on Games as a Service
They are doing this because the company’s games are currently performing better than ever before. The “Back Catalog,” meaning the existing players, are more profitable than ever. Therefore, Ubisoft wants to concentrate on “Live Operations.” This means that Ubisoft is focusing more on “Games as a Service” , which are games that have a long lifespan, are supplied with content and updates for an extended period, and thus generate profit for a longer time.
We do not know whether the game that is being expanded instead of continued refers to The Division or perhaps Rainbow Six Siege. Both titles are certainly successful.
The future of The Division is currently completely open. There are no indications yet of what a Year 2 for The Division could look like.
We can speculate that Ubisoft had once planned to continue with “The Division 2” now. For Destiny, “Destiny 2” was also originally planned two years after the launch of the first part. If Ubisoft had followed this template, a “The Division 2” would have been due in Spring 2018, which would still fall under the timeline Ubisoft discussed today.
Instead, they will now enter a “Year 2” if the title they are talking about was indeed “The Division.”
All very hypothetical, a lot of “would have, could have, bicycle chain,” but that’s how it is when large companies hold their conferences without really showing their cards.
