For the movie adaptation of The Division, a director and writer has been found: Oscar-winning Stephen Gaghan.
As Ubisoft announces, Stephen Gaghan will be the writer and director of the upcoming “The Division” film. Gaghan has already been nominated for an Oscar twice, which he ultimately received for his screenplay to Traffic in 2001.
Now Gaghan is set to present his vision of the MMO shooter to a global film audience.
Ready to Take Risks
Gaghan himself has already made a statement: He is excited to work with Ubisoft Motion Picture and Massive. They are great, extraordinarily creative, and ready to take risks.
Gaghan sees as an important part of the success of The Division the visual landscape that the developers created. Their vision of apocalyptic Manhattan is immersive, strange, yet familiar – and filled with numerous opportunities.
What Can We Expect in the Movie?
As early as summer 2016, rumors about a movie surfaced, which were officially confirmed in August. Ubisoft announced: The Division is coming to the big screen.
In the leading roles are Jessica Chastain (Interstellar, Zero Dark Thirty) and Jake Gyllenhaal (End of Watch, Nightcrawler). Gaghan emphasized that it is remarkable to be able to work with these two stars so early in the process. Both actors are to take on a producer role with their companies Freckle Films (Gyllenhaal) and Nine Stories (Chastain) and will be directly involved in the development process of the “The Division” film.
Currently, no information is known about the plot or a release date.
The Division is not the first Ubisoft game to receive a film adaptation. Currently, the “Assassin’s Creed” film featuring Michael Fassbender is in theaters. There are also plans for Splinter Cell, Ghost Recon, Watch Dogs, and Rabbids.
