Since the release of The Division around two years ago, there have been various oddities in the form of bugs, glitches, and other strange things. We show you a few examples.
Massive The Division is a monster of a game. One of the main features of the shooter is the scale of the vast, detailed open world in Manhattan.
As if most developers didn’t already have enough trouble designing such a world, a complex server structure is added. This separates the Dark Zone, the survival area, and the underground from the actual PvE area.
Such a system invites all sorts of errors in the form of bugs, glitches, or lags.
Doors in The Division – A constant problem!
Those who have regularly farmed at the Lexington Event Center will surely have noticed this: Doors often don’t work properly! Enemies enter the room through closed doors, or these doors do not open, preventing enemies from getting out.
Such things happen frequently in Manhattan. Kotaku reports on the strange door phenomenon of The Division. In all patch notes from the last few months, there was always a point found among the fixes: “Fixed a weird door” – which means that a strange door was fixed.
“We are always on the lookout for strange doors.” Christian Pena, one of the producers of The Division
In response to Kotaku’s inquiry, Pena said that it has become a sort of running gag in the patch notes; however, the game actually has a problem with a large number of doors.
Understandable when you imagine the number of entrances in a city like New York. Apparently, you cannot renovate them all at once.
Out-of-Map Glitch, or: Life from Below
In the early days, it often happened that players could glitch into areas outside the intended level boundaries. This could be used for clever farming. However, this often happened unintentionally.
Those who experienced it know how quickly it could happen. You take cover, want to leave it, and suddenly find yourself free-falling beneath Manhattan.
Here is a small example:
Errors of this kind occur across genres and have become almost normal in open-world games. Currently, there seem to be no such problems in The Division.
Shields Up, or Not?
Lovers of the ballistic shield may vaguely remember the times when it was practically unusable.
It could simply disappear, prevent you from shooting, or not be usable at all. Even consumables could not always be used. The shield was more of a handicap than a useful skill. This had strong effects on build diversity; proper tanks were not to be found during that time.
A heated debate about the role-playing aspects broke out. Why specialize when the abilities were either too weak or didn’t function?
Fortunately, Massive reacted and fixed all the errors surrounding the shield, followed later by the new D3 FNC set, whose secret version currently ranks among the strongest PvE builds.

Fear the Backpack
It was a difficult few weeks after the release of The Division, as some players were plagued by a curious bug related to crafting a backpack.
Those who crafted a high-end backpack suddenly found themselves getting kicked from the server and unable to log back in. The cause of the problem was not the same for everyone, and to this day, no one outside the development team knows what caused this error.
What was clear was that the bug was related to high-end backpacks and the calculation of item mods that players can apply to their gear. After several weeks during which many players were completely locked out of Manhattan, the bug was finally fixed with Patch 1.1.

The list of strange moments, but also less amusing bugs is long, with reports of
- Players getting stuck on corners, tables, and other objects
- Civilians appearing and disappearing out of nowhere, or even changing gender in front of agents’ eyes
- Gitching through walls with mobile cover, enabling some unfair exploits
- Stunts caused by flying enemy corpses
- Players gliding above the ground while crouched
Animation errors also count, often delivering the funniest visuals. When a teammate’s weapon hovers next to their head and seemingly fires of its own accord, it’s likely familiar and only worth a chuckle for any long-time agent.

Although most bugs and glitches are simply annoying and detract from the gaming experience, they can also leave strangely memorable impressions and make for some laughs.
Fortunately, Massive has tried to fix all these issues. Although massive server problems occurred at the start of the Global Event Blackout, The Division is probably more bug-free now than ever before.
Surely you also have some memories of such situations. Tell us about them in the comments!
