The upcoming online shooter “Tom Clancy’s The Division” has now been rated by the ESRB as suitable for “Adults” and classified as a “Mature” title. Additionally, the rating reveals some information about the game content.
These small stickers on games reveal at a glance the suitability of the games for different audiences. There are various organizations responsible for each region. For the USA, this is handled by the ESRB (Entertainment Software Rating Board), which has given “The Division” an “M” rating. This means the recommended age is 17 or older.
According to the ESRB, “The Division” features realistic gunfights with screams of pain and plenty of blood. Players will explore an “urban area” (a city) after a bio-terror attack and engage in “realistic, tactical firefights” against militants and street gangs. The characters primarily use submachine guns, shotguns, turrets, and grenades to kill one another.
According to the ESRB rating, there are also some sequences that show corpses, some of which are hanging from the ceiling. Players must also rescue hostages in certain levels of the game, some of whom get harmed in cutscenes. The story is thus enhanced and told through cutscenes.
Furthermore, terrible, terrible words are used in the game (Warning! Bad words ahead) such as “fuck, shit, and asshole.”
That’s all it took for the ESRB to slap an “M” on it. After choosing the dark scenario, this was to be expected. Author Tom Clancy didn’t write about ponies but rather about military and terrorist threats. Too much softening would not be in the spirit of the fans.
The Division is set to launch in March for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. A beta for the three platforms is expected in the coming weeks.
