Recently, it was announced that The Division 2 will continue into 2021 and beyond, with new content on the way. However, this is apparently far from certain. For as news now shows, the support for the game was apparently already on the brink of termination.
This is what The Division 2 has now announced: After Ubisoft previously provided hope for the future of The Division 2, the responsible team behind the title has now reached out to fans in a personal message.
In brief: The developers express their heartfelt thanks for the support of the players and excitedly announce that additional content for The Division 2 will be released later this year.
However, the message also shows how close this decision must have been. Even the development team seems a bit surprised that they are still able to work on further content for The Division 2 after Year 2.
No substantial content was planned after Year 2
The message reveals more: It appears that Title Update 12 was supposed to be the last major update for The Division 2. Some players had already suspected this, and the team has now confirmed it in their message.
Thus, the game would likely not receive any substantial content or innovations beyond Year 2 (which ends like Season 4 in early March). Because these – by the way, even the Seasons – have always come with major Title Updates.
The fact that it will continue now is mainly thanks to the ongoing passion and support from fans and players. At least, this is what it sounds like. The developers express their gratitude and repeatedly emphasize how much it means to them. It really seems like they themselves didn’t believe it anymore.
This is how many fans felt as well: After the announcement of the Star Wars project and the generally quiet recent times around the game, many had already speculated about the ‘end’ of The Division 2.
Some assumed that the shooter would only be kept alive on absolute minimal resources in Year 3 and that it would continue (if at all) without substantial new content – at most with Seasons. And it seems that this was actually only narrowly averted.
What happens next? There isn’t a precise timeline. The developers basically just say that they are already working on fresh content scheduled to be released later in 2021. More details are to follow, but it is still too early for that.
However, it is also stated that they are only in an early development phase. Therefore, one should not expect this content right at the beginning of Year 3, which is in March. It is currently unknown whether it will first continue with another Season or if there will be a period of time without new content.
