Finally, we know for sure that The Division 2 will continue and also receive fresh content in 2021. But when will the new content arrive? We summarize what is known so far.
Many have been eagerly waiting for this: The future of The Division 2 has been quite a mystery for some time. There has been a long silence from the official side, and the community sank into speculation.
- Will a new expansion in the style of Warlords be released at the start of Year 3 in March?
- Will it continue at a low burn – at most with seasons?
- Is there going to be a The Division 3? Will it continue at all?
Now we finally have certainty. After Ubisoft already gave some hope, the team behind The Division 2 has also confirmed: Yes, new content for the game will come in 2021. What many might be wondering now: When exactly?
New content in 2021 – But when?
This is what the developers say: As of now, there is no concrete date. The developers only mentioned in a message to fans, “Later this year.”
At least it is already clear that one should not expect this content at the very start of Year 3, i.e. at the beginning of March. This is because the development team explained at the same time that they are currently in an early development phase of the new content. Therefore, it may still be some time before it arrives. Some speculate for (at the earliest) summer, if not even autumn.
Endless Mode The Summit as a small point of reference: The time needed depends on the type of content the developers are working on. There should soon be first information on this. Additionally, it depends on how many staff from Massive are effectively working on the content and whether other studios like Red Storm are involved. Because Massive is now also handling Star Wars.
If it is only seasons, an earlier release would also be conceivable. If it is something of the caliber of “Warlords of New York”, it could very well be that we would have to wait until the end of the year. But if it is something in between, for example “only” a new mode, then The Summit could serve as a small point of reference.
In late May 2020, the Endless Mode The Summit was leaked and subsequently confirmed by Massive. However, it was stated back then (as well as now regarding the new content) that the mode was still very early in development. Players and experts had speculated on early 2021 as a release window.
But it happened much faster than most had estimated. The Summit was added to the game on September 22, 2020, with Title Update 11 – just under 4 months after it was originally said to be still very early in development. So if something comparable is in the works, a release at the beginning or during the summer seems quite plausible. But so far, all of this remains pure speculation.
Also interesting: When Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot recently commented on the future of The Division 2, he said:
Apparently, there are plans for the game that extend beyond 2021. However, what these plans look like is currently also not known. Although the team also seemed surprised that it is continuing, the game at least seems to have a secure future for the next 2 years. And that alone should already be a reason for joy for many fans.
