The update 1.8 of The Division is supposed to bring the excitement back into the Underground. There will be new technologies, new dangers, and better loot!
The State of the Game just aired on November 9th. The most important info right away: There is still no release date for update 1.8! Massive will announce this as soon as possible – probably next week in the livestream. As soon as there is a date, you will find out on Mein-MMO.de!
In today’s livestream, the developers spoke instead about the new Underground. The Underground is a paid game mode that was introduced with update 1.3 and the Underground DLC in summer 2016. Over the months it lost relevance. With update 1.8, it will finally be revised.
What does the new Underground in 1.8 bring?
Currently, the Underground offers little variety. The rooms are arranged differently each time, but you always have the same objectives to complete; you basically do the same thing every time.
According to the developers, update 1.8 brings excitement back to the Underground. Two important innovations are coming:
- Hunters are coming! These are the powerful enemies you already know from Survival. In the Underground, the Hunters can appear at any time unexpectedly. They would be looking for you. You never know when and where you will be attacked by Hunters in the Underground.
- “New technologies” will be used. As an example, shock ammunition is mentioned: a directive causes you to permanently receive shock ammunition. This can electrify opponents. However, you must not fire for too long, as with every shot a bar fills up, and when that is full, you will be shocked yourself. If you do not shoot, the bar empties:

- This technology grants you more power – but if you use shock ammunition too generously, you will be punished.
Overall, 5 new directives will come that not only bring advantages but also disadvantages and significantly change the gameplay experience. According to the developers, the Underground can be seen as a test area for these new technologies and for new builds that fit them.
- The effect of another directive is already known: the UI and the map flicker, they are displayed incorrectly and are only occasionally visible. For that, the skills have shorter cooldowns and can be used more frequently.
Hunters in the Underground and better loot!
The Hunters are supposed to present a constant threat that can occur at any time. The rule is: They are always outnumbered by +1. If you are two in the Underground, three Hunters will appear. If you start with four, five Hunters will appear.
The likelihood is high that they will defeat you – they are more dangerous than in Survival.
So you don’t have to start the Underground from the beginning again, with 1.8 checkpoints are coming. If you die in phase 3, it’s frustrating if you have to restart. That’s no fun. You invest a lot of time and receive no reward at the end. Therefore, you can continue playing from the checkpoint after dying.
In the Underground, you can expect Exotics and secret gear sets as rewards. Both the Hunters and the named bosses can drop these items. In addition, there are “secret chests” that can also contain Exotics and Classified gear.
More information:
- If the Hunters defeat you and you need to respawn, they will not appear again in this run. They can appear a maximum of once per run.
- Weekly missions will be introduced for the Underground.
- The Rave Room returns and can randomly occur in a run! Other rooms that were very rare will also appear more frequently in 1.8.
