How did the discussion about the youth word arise? On July 8, 2024, Papaplatte, one of the most well-known German Twitch streamers, along with his colleague and streamer BastiGHG, creates a funny moment during a live stream when they discuss potential candidates for the youth word 2024.
The discussion arises when both streamers talk about a previous Instagram story where Papaplatte used the phrase “Ein bisschen durchwhoppan.” Promptly, Papaplatte suggests: “I think we should go with durchwhoppan for the youth word, bro.”

Which words have been submitted so far? In the discussion, Papaplatte criticizes the proposals submitted so far for the youth word 2024. He finds terms like “I’m cooked,” “I’m spraying the yogurt,” and “full yogurt” unsuitable.
Instead, he prefers “Whoppa” as a “better number” that, in his opinion, offers more expressive options. “We are at a better point,” he comments.
What does “Whoppa” mean? According to the two streamers, it is probably a kind of universal word that can be filled with meaning. This can express something that could not be expressed before, explains BastiGHG.
“It opens a new door,” summarizes Papaplatte. As an example, they provide: “I’m going to whoppa here nicely now.” or “I’m whoppaing myself to bed now.”
The elections are still ahead
How does the process work? The decision on whether “Whoppa” will be crowned the youth word 2024 is still pending.
Currently, suggestions for the youth word can still be submitted until July 18, 2024. Voting on the youth word will begin on July 30, 2024, and the winner will finally be announced on October 19, 2024 (via Langenscheidt).
Papaplatte won the elections last year
What youth words have there been in recent years? Of course, Papaplatte’s suggestion is not meant to be taken too seriously. The streamer is known for actively campaigning for the election of the youth word.
In 2021, he attempted to establish the word “Papatastisch,” which, however, was not chosen as the youth word of the year. The word that won was: “cringe.”
In 2022, the word “Smash” was chosen as the youth word, although this year gaming, Twitch, and streaming terms were also available for selection.
In 2023, Papaplatte’s engagement was more successful: he supported the word “goofy,” which was ultimately chosen as the youth word of the year 2023.
