In Fortnite: Battle Royale, our author Jürgen is currently feeling a bit bored. The reason is the seemingly endless event involving the cube and the flying island.
Please don’t get me wrong: I love Fortnite, and one of the reasons for that is the many cool things that always happen on the map. Highlights so far have been the comet in Season 3 and the rocket launch, as well as the growing rifts in the sky in Season 4.
But the current event with the cube and its mischief in Seasons 5 and 6 isn’t quite capturing my interest.
The road trip was already boring
Graffiti loser instead of Vikings: My beef with the current plot started when the story of Season 5 turned out to be a fun road trip. I never liked the silly graffiti dude Drift and found the Viking skins that came out at the same time much better.
It’s just annoying that the Norsemen never appeared in the story, and their lonely ship on the mountain didn’t even get a name. “Viking-Village” would have even been a typical Fortnite alliteration!
Nothing is happening! Every week I hoped that something would finally happen and the road trip idyll would finally end. But every time a new picture of Drift came out, doing some nonsense with the color bomber and her friends.
Even the appearance of the long-awaited bonus skin “Enforcer” from the Road Trip Challenge was only acknowledged with a simple picture. Nothing else happened!
I expected the mysterious Enforcer to be at least as important for the further story as the Visitor back in Season 4. After all, he ignited the rocket and opened the rifts.
Instead, we got… “Kevin”.
The Cube: Cool, but too weird
But then something did happen in Season 5: Suddenly lightning struck Paradise Palms several times. A huge cube formed, which the Reddit community also named “Kevin, the Cube”.
At that time, I was on my honeymoon in Ireland and sat somewhat puzzled in front of the articles that my colleagues had written about it.
What does a purple giant cube have to do with Fortnite? And then the thing somehow rolled around and left runes. What is all this?
This is getting too strange: Don’t get me wrong, a big cube rolling around was kind of cool. But it was already pretty weird for me and not really understandable. The previous plot elements were also quite chaotic, but still made some sense.
With the cube, I felt like a player in a pen and paper role-playing game, where the game master is on drugs and suddenly makes a pink spaceship appear in Aventuria.
Get to the end!
The cube just won’t go away! In the end, the cube finally disappeared in Loot Lake and turned it into a giant trampoline for a while. Funny, but again I thought, “Why?”.
Then Season 5 was over, and Season 6 with the horror theme and the cool skins from the Battle Pass was already much more appealing. But the cube theme wasn’t over yet.
Now it can fly too! “Kevin” rose again along with the island in Loot Lake. Why? No one knows. It just is! Then the island also began to slowly fly around and activate the runes that the space cube had left behind in Season 5. In the end, the runes also flew, only to crash shortly after.
Meanwhile, the island along with the cube is back over the former Loot Lake, where it was originally too. There it seems to open a portal in the sky. Everything felt somehow familiar…
Do whatever you want, cube! And then I slowly couldn’t care less about all of it. Because this whole event has just gone on for too long. I can really understand the players on Reddit who are already making their jokes:
- A sarcastic fellow reports: “Oh, I think I know what is going to happen: Kevin opens a portal to our world and things fall through!”
- Another player still doesn’t really believe in the finale: “Surely Kevin will go for another round now and collect all the runes again, reset them to their original places, and activate them anew.”
Well, hopefully that won’t happen. But this whole event with the cube and the island has already lasted about 7 weeks, and it’s finally time for something new.
Does the story end with Halloween? Luckily, there is hope for that. Because tomorrow, on October 24, the new Halloween event titled “Darkness has risen” starts.
Perhaps the portal will finally be open, and the next step in the Fortnite story will come. Hopefully, the whole cube plot will finally make sense.
