Eiichiro Oda is the creator of One Piece and has been coming up with new adventures for the Straw Hat crew for over 27 years. For his next arc, the mangaka wanted to know how ChatGPT would continue the story – and he even liked the second answer.
What did ChatGPT suggest? As the One Piece team reveals, Oda asked ChatGPT what he could write about the following week (via X). He couldn’t think of anything and wanted something really funny.
ChatGPT then suggested a story in which Luffy and his friends must face the “King of Shadows” from the East Blue. He is an extremely powerful Devil Fruit user who can control his shadow. His goal is to kidnap Tony Chopper.
Luffy and the others cannot defeat him and sail to Shadow Island to fight against the king with new allies. Eventually, they manage to rescue Chopper. However, Oda found the story so boring that he asked for a new idea – and was promptly rewarded.

Which story did Oda like? With his second suggestion, ChatGPT got even wilder. But Oda liked the idea so much that he replied at the end that he would “draw this story exactly like that”:
- On a pirate ship that is not described in detail, there are aliens.
- They are pursuing an evil spaceship that destroyed their planet. The pirate crew helps them in hunting down the spaceship.
- Along the way, they land on an island where an evil witch lives. She is interested in the star fragment of the aliens, which was originally intended for the resurrection of the destroyed planet.
- The aliens defeat the witch who wanted to steal the star fragment. After that, they resume the chase.
- Suddenly, the plot halts for ChatGPT, as in the next section, the pirates help to rebuild the aliens’ planet.
How likely is it that Oda would actually draw this? In fact, there are aliens in One Piece, which makes the idea not so far-fetched at all. But that would also be the only point through which ChatGPT’s story would fit into One Piece.
So far, there are very few fantasy and sci-fi elements in One Piece. Instead, the theme focuses on pirates and ancient mythologies. We can imagine a witch and a spaceship less in this context.
Oda also asked the question in February 2023. At that time, the manga was in the Egghead Island arc, and as we know, the Elban arc followed. This arc is about Vikings and Norse mythology. We have yet to find witches and aliens here. Therefore, we assume that his answer was meant as a joke.
The mangaka might save the idea of fantasy beings for future arcs. However, as the manga is currently in its final stages, we assume that no outrageous story will follow: When does the story of One Piece end?
