If you’re interested in more stories from Akira Toriyama, the creator of Dragon Ball, you will be well served with Sand Land. As the responsible parties have now announced, there will even be an anime series next year that you can watch with an active subscription to Disney+.
What is Sand Land?
- Sand Land is a manga that originally appeared in 2000. It comprises only one issue.
- It is a video game by Bandai Namco for PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC in development. A release date has not yet been set.
- On August 18, 2023, the film of the same name premiered in Japan. A release in Germany is still pending. The film has a runtime of approximately 105 minutes and grossed (only in Japan!) 2.3 million US dollars (via Box Office Mojo).
Now, an anime series is to follow, which will be aired on Disney+ in spring 2024. Sand Land: The Series will pick up the content from the film but will include cuts that did not make it into the movie.
Additionally, the original work by Akira Toriyama will be included. There will also be a new story that connects to the film version. The story was specifically created by the Dragon Ball creator for the anime series!
You will learn what lies behind Sand Land in the following trailer:
This is what Sand Land is about
What happens in Sand Land? Although Sand Land is from the same creator as Dragon Ball, they have nothing in common otherwise. So you should not expect that suddenly Son-Goku and Piccolo will appear around the next corner.
We follow the events from the perspective of the demon prince Beelzebub. He lives in a desert world of the future, where water becomes scarce. Both humans and demons suffer from extreme water shortage. The remaining water has been claimed by a greedy king.
That is why Beelzebub teams up with his assistant Thief and Sheriff Rao to search for the mysterious phantom lake. It is supposed to be located somewhere in the desert. On their journey, they encounter dragons, bandits, and the king’s army.
The voices of the individual characters might be familiar to you from some video games. Beelzebub is voiced by Mutsumi Tamura, known as the voice of A.K.I. from Street Fighter 6. Kazuhiro Yamaji will voice Sheriff Rao. He was previously heard as Cid Highwind in Kingdom Hearts II.
The trio is completed by Cho and may be familiar to some as Aratoron from Phantasy Star Online 2.
Akira Toriyama has his hands full. In 2024, not only is a new anime series coming for Sand Land, but also for Dragon Ball: New series for the cult anime starts in 2024 and will shrink Son-Goku and Vegeta again
