Borderlands 3 already has a pretty crazy past. You can be glad that you didn’t have to experience these absurd covers.
Many fans are looking forward to Borderlands 3, which was already mentioned in advance as one of the games of the year 2019. However, the development of Borderlands and its marketing is a convoluted path that has produced some absurd ideas.
At Comic Con in San Diego, the developer Gearbox showed various images. These are “cover art,” meaning the title images of the game that were supposed to be printed on the box but unfortunately didn’t make it. Some of these images are quite bizarre.

The original design apparently intended for the Psycho on the cover to not only shoot himself in the head with his two finger guns but also to use a foot for assistance. After all, the Psycho in Borderlands 1 only used one hand and in Borderlands 2 both hands. Since a third hand would probably be too bizarre even for Borderlands, a foot would have had to suffice.
Another cover, which was apparently still in rough form, would have shown three little baby psychos, two of whom would have been hanging onto their mother’s (or father’s – it is still Borderlands) chest. The third would then have pointed to the “3” in the image, just like it is on the final image.
It would also have been quite bizarre to have a cover featuring a thoughtful Psycho sitting, apparently contemplating life. Just with the small addition that his head was replaced by a huge weapon. Who wouldn’t be contemplative at that sight?
A much “cleaner” image would have shown just the silhouette of a Psycho who was “executing” himself with three fingers of his right hand. Then the title of the game wouldn’t have been “Borderlands 3” but “Bord3rlands”.
The last image also shows a Psycho aiming his finger gun. However, it protrudes to the right out of the image, only to reappear on the left side. That’s also one way he can shoot himself.
What do you think of these cover ideas? Is it good that Borderlands 3 rejected these suggestions? Or would one of them have fit the game better?
