Does anyone still remember the card game Scrolls by Minecraft creators Mojang? The game is now called Caller’s Bane and is distributed as a free-to-play title. Here’s the download.
Scrolls becomes the free-to-play game Caller’s Bane
What is Scrolls? Scrolls was announced by Mojang in 2011. The online card game, in which you must destroy three of the opponent’s five idols in a duel with your deck to win, had a tough time. Due to its name, there was a lawsuit from ZeniMax Media, which was settled in 2012. ZeniMax granted a license for the word “Scrolls” to Mojang. However, the game couldn’t convince like the competition in the form of Hearthstone, The Elder Scrolls Legends, or Gwent.
Scrolls becomes Caller’s Bane. Why Scrolls is suddenly called Caller’s Bane, the developer studio does not disclose. Perhaps the license from ZeniMax has expired. From now on, you can play the card game for free, but this comes with a disadvantage: The official servers will be closed. From now on, players must set up their own servers, similar to how it works in Minecraft. Nothing changes about the game itself, the gameplay remains the same.
- You cannot transfer card decks or progress
- Progress is saved on community servers, which is why you should choose one and stay there
- Players get tools to set up their own servers and can then give entire card decks to other players
The community could make the game big. Scrolls was not a bad game. And now that the control is in the hands of the community, they can ensure that the online card game becomes great. It could turn out to be a significant advantage that players can now set up their own servers. Who knows, perhaps Caller’s Bane will turn into a popular and successful online card game over the summer.
