In Borderlands 3, players will have to contend with new villains. A prominent role will be played by the Calypso twins, who are likely to inherit Handsome Jack as the main antagonist. What are their motives and what does the new cult “Children of the Vault” have to do with it?
Why do villains play such an important role in Borderlands? The Borderlands series has always been heavily story-driven, with the characters and their development throughout the narrative at the forefront. While there was no overly complex antagonist in Borderlands 1, the second part featured Handsome Jack, one of the best villains I have ever encountered.
As Handsome Jack interacted with players throughout the story, his motives and development could be captured in much more depth. This led to not only dramatic but also exceedingly humorous moments.

The presumed main villains of Borderlands 3, the Calypso twins, thus step into enormous shoes. Whether Gearbox can portray the twins as strongly remains to be seen. However, due to the announcement trailer, several details about these characters with striking hairstyles are already known.
What is known about the Calypso twins in Borderlands 3
This information can be gathered from the trailers: Although the two villains do not utter a word in the already known trailers, the surroundings of the individual scenes reveal a lot. For example, posters indicate that the twins are named Troy and Tyreen and apparently lead the cult “Children of the Vault”.
Notably, both bear the distinctive glowing tattoos characteristic of the Sirens in Borderlands. Particularly intriguing are these tattoos on Troy. At the start of the announcement trailer, he has no tattoos.
Only after confronting Lilith does Troy suddenly have red shimmering tattoos (which are actually blue), while Lilith’s tattoos no longer glow. Apparently, the villains have succeeded in robbing Lilith of her powers. You can watch the corresponding scene again in the video:
Additional notable traits of the main villains:
- Troy is the taller of the twins and has black hair. Around his neck, he wears a necklace with two vials containing unknown contents. Furthermore, prosthetic limbs seem to be extremely popular in Borderlands; Troy has a mechanical arm.
- His sister Tyreen is shorter and has scars of unknown origin all over her face. In contrast to her brother, she has white hair.
What are the motives of the Calypso twins? Currently, this can only be speculated. In one scene of the announcement trailer, the twins confront Lilith and an alien artifact. However, it is unclear whether the siren, who was playable in the first part, is the target of the twins, or the artifact itself.
If we follow the stories of previous Borderlands installments as well as the name of the cult that the twins lead, we can assume that players will once again race against the twins for access to the chamber(s).
What is the cult “Children of the Vault”? At the beginning of the announcement trailer, a Psycho can be seen who has removed his mask and is walking towards a camp of the Children of the Vault (CoV). The cult therefore also seems to be a refuge for bandits looking to turn their lives around.
Exciting: CoV is not only a mysterious cult whose motives are still hidden but also a new weapon manufacturer. The firearms of this faction can fire infinitely but sometimes tend to overheat. The Infinity pistol from Borderlands 2 also had infinite ammunition but did not overheat. However, the weapon design can definitely hold its own:
Borderlands 3 will be released on September 14, 2019 for PC, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One.
What do you think of the twins and the mysterious cult? What role will they play?
