The Marvels premiered in theaters on November 8. However, the initial balance after the weekend is disastrous for the superhero film. No Marvel film in the past has had such a poor start on the big screen as the three female superheroes.
The Marvels directed by Nia DaCosta features the superhero trio Captain Marvel, Ms. Marvel, and Monica Rambeau, who team up to save the universe.
However, the new superhero film had a poor start at the box office. So poor that it set a new record.
Here you can see a teaser trailer for The Marvels:
“This is an unprecedented collapse of the Marvel box office”
With a box office total of $47 million in the USA, the superhero film recorded the worst opening for a Marvel film.
Thus, the film earned even less than the previous record holder: The Incredible Hulk, a film from 2008 that started with a mere $55.4 million in the USA.
Even at the international box office, The Marvels flopped at launch with $110 million in box office earnings.
Because the film was expensive: The production costs were about $220 million, plus an additional $100 million just for the film’s promotion.
“This is an unprecedented collapse of the Marvel box office,” commented David A. Gross, who leads the film consulting firm Franchise Entertainment Research, regarding the film’s failure. The strikes would harm marketing, but are not the reason for the poor numbers.
He sees the problem in the oversupply of superhero productions and stated: “Since the pandemic, superhero films have suffered due to simultaneous streaming, uninspired and poor films, and oversaturation on television.” (via Variety)

The flop of The Marvels is currently not the only crisis the superhero company is going through.
Because a supervillain is also giving the bosses of the MCU headaches: Kang, played by Jonathan Majors, was supposed to become a central figure in the next Marvel phase, but now they are considering who could replace him.
