MeinMMO editor Dariusz was hoping for cool new shooters at the Summer Game Fest 2024. Ultimately, he liked a roguelite with shooter gameplay the most.
The Summer Game Fest 2024 showed numerous trailers – but there was little for shooter fans. Almost all shooters that were shown were already known. We only got one new announcement and a surprise from Riot Games:
- The tactical shooter Valorant is coming to consoles (Xbox Series X/S and PS5)
Otherwise, there were:
- A cinematic trailer for the loot shooter “The First Descendant,” which announced the release for July 2, 2024.
- Killer Bean, a crazy single-player roguelike shooter where you play as a coffee bean.
- A new trailer for Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2, a shooter that offers both coop and PvP gameplay.
There was a highlight for shooter fans, but it just didn’t grab me
What was the shooter highlight? The highlight among shooters was probably the new trailer for Delta Force Hawk Ops. We finally saw gameplay of the extraction mode, and it looked significantly better than I feared – especially graphically.
Moreover, the events of the well-known rescue mission “Black Hawk Down” – which also has a movie – will be playable in a campaign. So there was also something for shooter fans who are not into extraction modes.

Why didn’t Delta Force grab me? Delta Force just didn’t evoke any emotions in me. The gameplay trailer looked quite good and showed exactly what you wanted to see from the game, but I wasn’t sitting in front of my screen thinking “Cool, I’m excited for that!” Delta Force missed generating hype.
In addition, we have received several shooters with realistic graphics and extraction gameplay in recent months. It started with Incursion Red River, then came Gray Zone Warfare, and shortly after Arena Breakout: Infinite. Delta Force needs to deliver more than interchangeable extraction gameplay to generate anticipation.
I felt differently about Hyper Light Breaker. I have been looking forward to this game for months, and the new trailer from the Summer Game Fest further fueled my anticipation. However, Hyper Light Breaker is not a real shooter; it’s a roguelite with shooter elements.
The best shooter is not even a shooter
What kind of game is that? Hyper Light Breaker (PC) is not a real shooter, but a roguelite that offers both shooting and melee weapons. The trailer shows, roughly speaking, how a player shoots monsters with a pistol.
As is typical for roguelites, a new attempt starts with the death of your character, which will inevitably happen once or twice. It can be played solo or in online co-op with friends and uses a third-person perspective.
In the procedurally generated open world, which changes with each new attempt, there are various characters and biomes that you can explore. You have gliders and hoverboards available for faster movement. Whether you want to explore the map or not, knowing that it will look different on the next respawn, is up to you.
