Star Wars: The Old Republic – For people who actually don’t like MMORPGs
Genre: MMORPG | Developer: Bioware | Platform: PC | Release Date: December 20, 2011| Model: Free2Play with optional subscription and item shop. Many features are behind paywalls | Combat System: Tab-targeting
That’s why you should play SWTOR
Ideal for: Star Wars fans and lovers of engaging single-player content in a MMO context should definitely check out SWTOR. Because few MMORPGs place so much emphasis on story and your choices within it.
Is there a catch? The graphics of SWTOR have never been good and have not improved in recent years.
Additionally, the tab targeting system is outdated and the strong focus on solo content may bother some players. For example, the latest story content can only be played solo.
What is Star Wars: The Old Republic? SWTOR by Bioware has become an MMO for people who actually prefer to play alone since the “Knights of the Fallen Empire” expansion.
In the expansion and its upcoming successor “The Legacy of the Sith,” you primarily play solo and follow a cinematic story that takes place thousands of years before the films in the early days of the Star Wars universe.
Moreover, Star Wars: The Old Republic is the official successor to Bioware’s RPG hit Knights of the Old Republic, and many story elements and characters reference KotOR. The story of SWTOR is truly unparalleled.
Especially in MMORPGs, which otherwise tend to treat the storyline rather poorly and usually tell a quite generic story, the excellent storytelling from Bioware stands out particularly.
The base game already told an exciting story during the leveling phase for each of the eight hero classes, in which our NPC companions also played an important role.
These are the features of SWTOR
All of this is surpassed by the expansion Knights of the Fallen Empire and its successor Knights of the Eternal Throne. Because here you play – apart from some missions in the endgame – actually alone and thus perfectly immerse yourself in a grand Star Wars story that comes with everything a Star Wars fan wishes for.
Lightsabers, evil empires, crazy plot twists, complicated relationships between the characters, epic duels, and massive space battles – you get all this along with the storytelling that Bioware is known for with SWTOR.
This much MMORPG is in SWTOR: On the other hand, SWTOR is still a classic MMORPG in which you can also participate in dungeons and raids.
However, there hasn’t been much new added in this area recently. The latest expansion “Onslaught” was also completed quite quickly. Nevertheless, it was popular among the players.
Less pleasant about SWTOR was the fairly customer-unfriendly Free2Play system, where you actually pay for almost everything (one-time) and therefore it is best to just stick with the subscription. However, this was improved with the July 2019 update. In 2020, the MMORPG started on Steam, otherwise it was a rather quiet year.
But soon something new should finally happen in SWTOR, as the major addon Legacy of the Sith is announced for February 15th and a lot should still happen in the game in the rest of 2022.
