Why You Should Play ESO
Ideal for: Those who are less into classic MMORPGs but loved Skyrim should definitely check out TESO. It is also a feast for story lovers, as the MMO is full of voiced quests and exciting stories. And for those who have had enough of classic endgame, this is also the right place, as here the journey is the goal. The endgame starts almost immediately.
The console version has been well implemented and the community on PS4 and Xbox One is quite large. It is one of the few high-quality MMORPGs that can also be played on console. Console players craving for MMOs should check it out. Meanwhile, ESO can also be played on PS5 and Xbox Series X/S, for which the game received a major next-gen update in August 2021.
Is there a catch? Some players are bothered that in ESO it doesn’t really matter how high you have leveled up. Additionally, the game plays more like a solo RPG than an MMORPG.
The often poor performance is another issue, which is expected to be fixed soon. Initial steps have already been taken in Update 24, which included the new DLC Dragonhold. However, performance continues to be an issue, especially in PvP.
What is ESO? The Elder Scrolls Online owes its success according to the statement of chief developer Matt Firor to the fact that it is not a classic MMORPG. And indeed, ESO resembles its big predecessor Skyrim, which was a pure single-player RPG, a little more with each update.
Many of the Skyrim fans did not want a World of Warcraft in Elder Scrolls style, and therefore The Elder Scrolls Online has always placed value on not appearing like a typical online RPG.
For example, there is no mini-map, but the compass known from Skyrim and Co. that leads to the active quest objective. Additionally, player characters are hardly distinguishable from NPCs, creating a lively and atmospheric game world where the well-known races and regions from the Elder Scrolls universe can be found.
And unlike in the single-player games of the series, we can travel through many different regions of Tamriel here. However, ESO does not offer a completely open world.
This is the great feature of ESO
This is how One Tamriel works: To enhance the Elder Scrolls feeling, the concept One Tamriel was introduced with Update 12. This removes the boundaries of the factions and essentially the levels as well. Any region can be explored by anyone.
As the heroes adapt to the local challenges, everyone can play as they wish. Since the combat system is dynamic and action-oriented, skill matters more than pure power.
As Skyrim and Co. have been particularly popular on consoles, The Elder Scrolls Online thrives on PlayStation 4 and 5 and Xbox One and Series S|X, boasting a large player base. The action combat system works smoothly with a gamepad.
New content comes this often: Instead of large expansions, smaller DLCs are released quarterly, usually introducing a new region and organization – such as the Thieves Guild or the Assassins. However, since 2017, one of these DLCs has always been a larger chapter, equivalent to a small expansion.
In 2017, ESO really took off. In February, the housing feature was introduced, and in the summer, the first major expansion Morrowind! Further DLCs took you into the steampunk world of Clockwork City in 2017. And in 2018, another major expansion came with Summerset.
However, the most popular chapter up to that point was Elsweyr in 2019, which, with the Season of the Dragon, brought a cohesive campaign for the entire year.
In 2020, the latest chapter Greymoor was released, taking players to Skyrim. This is particularly interesting for Skyrim fans. In 2021, the adventure continues with “Gates of Oblivion“. Recently, the major chapter expansion Blackwood was released.
