The MMORPG Dragon’s Prophet is closing at the end of May, as the publisher Gamigo announced. Back in 2019, the game shut down its servers in its home country of Taiwan. Now it also catches our western version.
What happened? The MMORPG Dragon’s Prophet: Savage Hunt will be discontinued on May 29. It is no longer financially viable, as the publisher Gamigo communicated in a message to the community.
Until the closure, there will be some actions to enjoy the last moments of the game:
- From May 14 until the servers shut down, there is a double chance for rare items
- During the same period, the “Creation Festival” will take place
- Additionally, all payment options will be disabled starting May 12. From May 14, all items in the shop will be reduced by 90%, so players with leftover currency can spend it.
Since the game is Free2Play, you can still check it out before it closes at the end of May. This is especially true if you are a big fan of dragons.
MMORPG for collectors and dragon fans
What is Dragon’s Prophet? The MMORPG revolves around collecting and raising dragons, and it faintly resembles Pokémon. The game offers you over 600 different dragons in all imaginable shapes and colors.
You can tame and train them. They will fight alongside you, serve as mounts, and provide bonuses for crafting or other content in the game.
Additionally, the game offers a story that flows linearly from start to max level, many side quests with standard tasks, guild battles, and various dungeons.
However, the dragons were and still are the main focus of Dragon’s Prophet.
Technical and content issues
What were the issues with Dragon’s Prophet? Dragon’s Prophet was released in 2013, but the MMORPG had many technical flaws, which were also criticized by the colleagues from GameStar in their release review. They gave the game a rating of 74, where only the dragons received praise.
The rest was considered mediocre.
In 2017, there was a temporary closure and a quick re-release. It included an album to make collecting the dragons even more important. However, the re-release of Dragon’s Prophet evidently did not bring the hoped turnaround.
Was the shutdown foreseeable? On Steam, the game reached a peak of 170 players, according to SteamDB, but since mid-2018, the number has been in single digits.
This doesn’t directly indicate the exact player counts, as there was and is a separate client from Gamigo, but it shows a certain trend.
Additionally, the game also struggled in other countries. It was shut down in America in 2015. In September 2019, the servers of Dragon’s Prophet were shut down in its home country Taiwan.
However, here in the west, it continued, just like Runes of Magic, another game from the developer Runewaker. That was also closed in Taiwan at the same time.
Now, well over 9 months later, the western version has met the same fate. However, it is not a sudden or surprising end.
