In 2013, our site Mein-MMO launched for the first time! Back then, some promising MMOs were starting. But which ones were most important to you at that time? We conducted a survey and present the winners here!
Four years ago, at the end of 2013, Mein-MMO went online for the first time. Just like today, we report on trending MMOs. Of course, there was no Destiny 2 or PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds four years ago, but there were other titles that interested you back then. By the way, the embarrassing title image also comes from 2013.
We selected the 4 most relevant new releases from our founding year based on view counts and asked you on Facebook which four games you found most interesting in 2013. Almost 300 users participated. Admittedly, it wasn’t the strongest MMO year. Here’s the selection:
Rank 4 – Dragons Prophet – 3%
The online role-playing game Dragons Prophet impressed back then especially with dragons! But not only as grim opponents did the fire-breathing lizards appear. You could capture, tame, and train the creatures into heavy mounts.
Thus, Dragon’s Prophet combined the typical MMORPG gameplay with quests, dungeons, and raids with the addictive collecting satisfaction of Pokémon. Only this time, instead of cute pocket monsters, grim dragons were collected. Consequently, Dragon’s Prophet was chosen for the 4th and last place in our 2013 ranking.
Our test of Dragon’s Prophet from 2013.
Rank 3 – Defiance – 9%
Defiance started in 2013 as a promising project. The game aimed to combine the advantages of a shooter with those of an online role-playing game. One could consider Defiance as the first MMO shooter of the new generation, from which Destiny and The Division also emerged.
The head of Trion, “Scott Hartsman”, responded to us at Gamescom 2017, when we brought up the current “MMO shooter boom”: “Defiance was ahead of its time in terms of concept and would resonate more today.” Additionally, there was a unique connection between Defiance as a game and the corresponding science fiction TV series.
Meanwhile, the series has been canceled, and Defiance instead continues the story. However, in 2013 the game was still so vibrant that you chose it for 3rd place.
By the way, here you can find our test of Defiance from December 2013.
Rank 2 – Neverwinter – 24%
The action-packed online role-playing game Neverwinter wasa full success back in 2013. On the one hand, it looked great and had a fast-paced action combat system. On the other hand, it took place in the famous Forgotten Realms world of Dungeons & Dragons, the ancestor of all role-playing games!
In Neverwinter, you slay through hordes of typical D&D monsters like orcs, undead, skeletons, and frost giants. The absolute highlight back then was the “Foundry”, an editor in which anyone could build their own dungeon or scenario and share it with the community. Neverwinter is still actively played today and was chosen by you in our survey as the 2nd best MMO of 2013.
By the way, here you can find a test of Neverwinter for the Playstation 4.
Rank 1 – Final Fantasy XIV – 61% of votes
In 2013, a game was given a second chance, which had initially flopped colossally. Final Fantasy 14 was relaunched this year under the guidance of Naoki Yoshida and thereby initiated a success that continues to this day. The powerful expansion Stormblood and its success is the proof.
Already at the relaunch, we at Mein-MMO covered Final Fantasy XIV, and to date, over 400 articles about Square Enix’s online role-playing game have accumulated. Due to its high quality and large fan base, Final Fantasy XIV was chosen by you as the top game of 2013!
