Houseplants are a popular enhancement in apartments. Now a team has presented a plant that is supposed to excel at one thing in particular. This sounds like the perfect plant for the gaming room, but the price is likely to disappoint many.
There are various reasons to have a plant in your apartment:
- Plants improve the humidity in the air, as they release 90% of the water back into the atmosphere.
- According to a NASA study, plants are natural air purifiers and clean the air of toxic substances.
- Furthermore, plants are said to reduce stress levels (via ncbi.nlm.gov).
A company wanted to make houseplants even better and modified a well-known plant that many people like to have in their homes. However, the price for such a plant is not exactly cheap.
Genetically modified plant is said to be 30 times more effective than normal plants
What exactly has the company done? The team from Neoplants has taken the air-purifying function of a Golden Pothos and adapted it. They had to completely decode the plant’s genome. This was reportedly as complicated as building an airplane (via bgr.com).
By the way, the remaining functions of the plant have not been changed, according to Neoplants. The plant does not grow faster and is not more resistant to diseases.
What does this change bring? With the genetically modified houseplant, the cleaning effect is supposed to be much better than that of conventional houseplants. According to Neoplants, the Neo P1 is even 30 times more effective than the best NASA plants (via neoplants.com)
The plant is supposed to handle organic compounds (VOCs) much better, which are used in various products such as chemicals, cleaning agents, or building materials. A comprehensive list can be found at the Federal Environment Agency.
What does such a plant cost? The genetically modified houseplant is expected to be available for a price of 179 US dollars and, when available in Germany, will likely cost around 180 to 200 euros. Thus, the plant is significantly more expensive than a normal houseplant. For comparison: A conventional Golden Pothos costs about 10 euros at the hardware store.
