There are games that you quickly forget. Others stay in your memory for weeks. And very few games stick in your mind so firmly that years later you still think back to them and feel the urge to play through them again every few years.
Exactly such a game series is the original “Mass Effect” trilogy. You are currently being thrown this series on Steam. Anyone who does not add this series to their own collection now is to blame.
What is the Legendary Edition? The “Legendary Edition” is essentially a “remaster” of the Mass Effect trilogy. Especially the first part has been revised, featuring prettier graphics and small gameplay improvements, so that the combat system feels largely comparable across all three games. The customizations for your Commander Shepard have also been improved so that they (or he) look identical across all three games.
In addition, the Legendary Edition includes all DLCs that were available for the games at the time, thus adding many hours of additional gameplay.
Who is Mass Effect suitable for? Basically for any fan of good RPGs with deep stories and great characters. Mass Effect offers numerous decisions with consequences that often do not come to fruition until one or two games later and can have far-reaching effects. In the best BioWare manner, you build relationships with various characters, have romances if you want, or create archenemies.
There are only a few characters that have “plot armor” – some decisions can lead to the death of your companions, which further influences the story.
This is garnished with a combat system that combines the best elements from shooters and RPGs. You shoot with futuristic weapons while simultaneously throwing biotic abilities (essentially “sci-fi spells”) or going stealthily. The customization of the character and your team has few limits.
What does the game cost right now? Currently, the “Mass Effect: Legendary Edition” on Steam is available for the price of 15 €. It is therefore a whopping 75% discounted. However, you need to hurry – the offer is only valid until May 27.
Even if you are “speeding through the story,” you can expect well over 100 hours of gameplay here – and several more if you really make full use of every side quest and every DLC.

Author’s opinion: A game that you will never forget
I still remember well that I was initially put off by Mass Effect. When my roommate and all his friends were completely caught up in the hype train shortly before the release of part 3, I was quite confused. However, I took the opportunity to check out the first part – and fell hopelessly in love after two hours.
It is rare for a game to have drawn me in so quickly and thoroughly. The game world was not only action-packed and exciting but also fascinated me so much that I even listened to “codex entries” about individual aspects of the world for several hours – and you know how boring that usually is.
The journey of Commander Shepard through the galaxy and the fight against the ominous Reapers is rightly considered “the great sci-fi epic” that is still celebrated by fans years later.
Mass Effect creates a brutal yet thrilling vision of the future with various civilizations and moral alignments. Even after the seventh run, you will still find small details that change with certain decisions and trigger a chain of events that lead to unknown happenings.
So if you currently have 15 euros to spare or just need a really good game for the long Pentecost weekend (and probably several days beyond), grab Mass Effect and come to love the world and its characters.
