You don’t know which character is the best for Borderlands 3 to play solo? We recommend FL4K, the Beastmaster class. And we have some tips on which two solo builds are suitable for FL4K and how you can skill them. Both for your campaign and for the endgame at Mayhem 3.
What class is FL4K? The sarcastic android is a so-called “Beastmaster” and has three pets available. The pets are part of his talent tree and can be switched at any time. The active pet is always present and is not summoned.
FL4K receives support in Borderlands 3 from Agent Zane, the Siren Amara and Soldier Moze.
A lead developer told us why FL4K is perfect for solo play: At gamescom 2019, I spoke with Paul Sage, the creative head of Borderlands 3. I asked him if he could give me a build tip for FL4K, as I was already totally smitten with the Beastmaster at that time:
FL4K has great survivability skills, as FL4K’s animals can revive him in “Fight for your Life” mode. He also has constant health regeneration. FL4K is great for players who want many skills that make their character live longer and play him as a tank.

FL4K solo build for the campaign
What is this FL4K build suitable for? It is a good all-round build for leveling and tanking alone. This way you are very resilient solo, as this build is primarily focused on survival, providing a lot of health and distracting damage from you.
The necessary talent trees
With these skill trees, FL4K becomes a reliable tank: Following the advice of creative head Paul Sage, I play FL4K alone as a super tank.
Particularly suitable is a combination of these skill trees:
- Master
- Hunter
Here are especially many skills with which you can make yourself nearly immortal. The skill point distribution for FL4K and these skill trees can look like this, for example:
This skill is particularly suitable for solo players: Lick your wounds.
In the Hunter tree, you will find the skill. If you go down, your pet will try to help you back up in the fight for survival. This skill is a great substitute if you don’t have a co-op partner to revive you.
The suitable action skill: Gamma Burst
What are action skills? These are the skills that each character can change at will. They are located at the top of the talent tree and can be switched independently of the other skill points.
What does Gamma Burst do?
- With this skill, FL4K teleports his active pet to the point you aim at.
- Simultaneously, the pet deals radiation damage to enemies nearby. Through radiation, the enemies receive damage over time.
- The pet itself becomes irradiated and grows to a significant size, causing even more radiation damage.
- If your pet is down or dead, it will be revived immediately by using Gamma Burst, with reduced health.
Why is Gamma Burst suitable for solo players? You can teleport your pet to a specific enemy, keeping it away from you. Through radiation damage, enemies can also be irradiated, which is great for crowd control, as they all take damage over time.
These pets are particularly good for solo play
Skag: Combining Gamma Burst with the Skag makes its melee attacks a practical companion. The Skag also increases your damage, which is a good balance if you are focusing on survivability skills in the build.
Spiderant: I also had good solo experiences with the Spiderant, as it constantly regenerates your health. That’s very handy when you’re having trouble surviving against certain enemies.
This is how I play FL4K solo
With the Beastmaster, I like to stay behind the shooting line and send my pets ahead. If an enemy annoys me particularly, I immediately unleash my loyal companion on it!
As you can see from the build I presented above, I focus completely on survival. Since I played the main campaign for the MeinMMO review of Borderlands 3 particularly quickly, I was sometimes “under-leveled” – but I had good counterplay against the enemies. So if you mainly want to play the campaign, you will do quite well with this.
Quickly, the sniper became my favorite weapon class for this build since it allows me to stay particularly well behind the shooting line. However, there are also some crit damage improvements in FL4K’s talents that would make a sniper even more effective than I am using the build.

FL4K Crit Build for Endgame
What is this FL4K build suitable for? This build is primarily designed for Mayhem 3. With it, maximum damage in a short time is possible. Exactly what you need against bosses in the endgame of Borderlands 3.
The skill trees for the build
With these talent trees, FL4K deals substantial damage: The build presented here focuses on the action skill “Fade Away” and your critical hit damage (crit). To skill it, you need talents from all trees:
- Hunter
- Sniper
- Master
To extract the maximum damage from FL4K, this skill distribution would be recommended:
The suitable action skill: Fade Away
Of course, you need an action skill for this build as well. You should choose “Fade Away” and add two action skill upgrades, which we will discuss later.
What does “Fade Away” offer you?
- You become invisible
- You fire 3 shots simultaneously
- Your shots are automatically critical hits
- Your movement speed and health regeneration are increased
These action skill upgrades you should use: As the first upgrade for your action skill, you should choose “Guerillas in the Mist”. This keeps your invisibility even after attacking. This skill gives you 25% more critical hit damage for 6 seconds.
Additionally, you should equip “Cold Stare.” With this action skill upgrade, you further increase FL4K’s critical damage when attacking the same target.
This is the best pet for this build: Since the build is focused on maximizing critical damage, the Weaponized Jabber is the best choice. With this cute little creature, you get a boost to your critical hit damage.
What makes the FL4K Crit Build special
This is how talents and action skills work together: With this skill distribution, you focus on maximum damage during your action skill. In invisibility, you deal 30% more damage from the start. This comes from the talent “Hidden Machine”. Your enemy has almost no target if they cannot see you – clever, right?
Additionally, each shot is a critical hit when “Fade Away” is active. With your talents, you can have a high critical hit damage bonus equipped. This way, you can literally watch the enemies’ health bar shrink during Fade Away.
These weapons give you an additional advantage: If you equip weapons from the brand Jakobs, you can take down bosses even faster. This brand is one of a total of 9 weapon manufacturers in Borderlands 3. It has the peculiarity of refilling your magazine on critical hits. Additionally, Jakobs weapons have a chance to ricochet.
