Alternatives with Sci-Fi Setting

Destiny 2 takes place in a fictional, post-apocalyptic future – in the “time after the Collapse”. However, before the Collapse, there was a Golden Age that was considered the peak of humanity (alien planets were colonized, rapid technological advancement occurred), and this was ushered in with the arrival of the Traveller.

The Destiny universe is thus set in a distinct science fiction setting.

There are several other sci-fi shooters, including already presented games like Anthem and Warframe that can be classified in this genre. Here are three more sci-fi shooters.

Star Wars Battlefront 2

Science Fiction? Those looking for complex science fiction worlds will sooner or later land in the “Star Wars” universe. To this end, the multiplayer shooter Star Wars: Battlefront 2 from EA was released at the end of 2017.

Compared to its predecessor, Star Wars Battlefront 2 features a story campaign for the first time, but the focus remains on action-packed multiplayer battles. Here there are various modes where you can either clash as a foot soldier against an opposing team or participate as a pilot in space battles. If you play on a console, couch co-op with split-screen is also available.

At launch, Battlefront 2 received massive criticism due to the loot box disaster, which is why the shooter still leaves a sour taste for many gamers. The developers have made massive improvements since then.

Due to the massive criticism, the controversial microtransactions were removed from the game even before the release. With Update 1.10 in April 2018, Battlefront 2 transitioned from a microtransaction nightmare to a fundamentally fair business model. Previously, in March 2018, the progression system was overhauled. Although microtransactions returned in April, they did so in a fair form and without a random factor. Loot boxes were completely removed from the game.

So if you enjoy fast action in the “Star Wars” universe, you get solid multiplayer fun with grand sound effects and strong graphics.

Defiance

Defiance is considered “the MMO shooter before Destiny”, featuring a structure similar to Bungie’s MMO shooter.

Science Fiction? In a futuristic setting, you set out alone or with other players to seek valuable alien technologies, fight off some enemies, and participate in dynamic events. You improve your skills, reach higher levels, and unlock powerful weapons.

Storywise, Defiance is connected to the eponymous TV series, which has since been discontinued. The SF MMO is still running, but it has aged a bit. Nevertheless, the team has plans to continue supporting the MMO shooter with updates that go beyond normal maintenance mode. Events and a new reward system are planned.

Defiance 2050

• Release: Summer 2018
• Platform: PS4, Xbox One, PC
• Model: Free2Play

With Defiance 2050, Trion Worlds wants to prove itself again in 2018 by releasing the shooter “from the ground up” for the current consoles PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC.

According to developer Trion Worlds, they have listened to the community’s wishes and want to give players the Defiance experience they’ve long desired. Defiance 2050 will not only be a graphic update of the original.

Science Fiction? From the story, Defiance 2050 is set 4 years later in the same sci-fi setting and promises many comfort features that are simply customary in modern online shooters. Moreover, even larger battles are offered, and the class system will be revised. The developers intend to introduce these and other new features in more detail in the future.

And Defiance 2050 does not replace the original:  As the developers explain, both versions should exist in parallel. So if you prefer to play the original, you can continue to do so. The team will continue to support the “old” version with updates.

Prey

Prey is a first-person shooter with RPG elements from Bethesda.

Science Fiction? It takes place in an alternative science fiction time where John F. Kennedy survived the assassination and later expanded the space program. This attracted alien beings from outer space.

You take on the role of Morgan Yu, awakening in a space station overrun by aliens in 2032, and now you must confront the hostile aliens. You make several decisions that affect the subsequent events and the ending.

Prey is a purely single-player shooter. There is no multiplayer mode. If you’re looking for a first-person shooter with an exciting sci-fi setting, you can spend some nice hours in Prey.
