The Avengers are arguably the most well-known superhero team from the Marvel Universe, alongside the X-Men. After all, they have also had several movies. However, the Avengers existed 1 million years ago in the history of the Marvel Universe, and one character you even know from the MCU.
Which Avengers are we talking about? In the Marvel Universe, the Avengers are not a fixed group with specific members. Throughout the comics, movies, and games, members regularly change. This sometimes depends on the time period of the story.
But the Avengers have existed in the Marvel Universe for 1 million years and resemble some characters or ideas you might know from various films. Even in prehistoric times, the Avengers fought against powerful threats. However, it must be said that not everything in the story is historically accurate.
Other people, same task
Why were the Avengers founded back then? The Avengers 1,000,000 BC first appeared in the comic Marvel Legacy No. 1 in 2017. In 2022, they also received their own series. Over 1,000,000 years in the past, Firehair was born as the first known mutant. She became the avatar of the Phoenix Force, an entity that was relevant in many X-Men films.
She noticed her destructive power and wanted to form a team to protect humanity. For this, she assembled the first version of the Avengers from the following members:
- Odin Borson: Allfather of Asgard and father of Thor. This is also the Odin known later in the 616 universe and from the films.
- Agamotto: The first Sorcerer Supreme, a role in the world later taken over by Dr. Strange. The mystical necklace of Dr. Strange is called the Eye of Agamotto.
- Black Panther (Mosi): Is the first Black Panther of a prehistoric tribe in Wakanda. At that time, a meteorite with vibranium landed in Wakanda, which is why Mosi also possesses claws made of vibranium.
- Iron Fist (Fan Fei): Fan Fei is the first version of the Iron Fist who learned martial arts. When she kills a dragon out of revenge, she gains mystical powers and Ki control.
- Starbrand (Vnn): Starbrand is a defense system of the first creatures from the universe and is a power granted to a person or creature during essential events. On Earth, it was first granted to a dinosaur during a meteor impact, and later to Vnn. Vnn is a Neanderthal who can only communicate with grunts.
- Ghost Rider: Even 1,000,000 years ago, a human received the spirit of vengeance and became the Ghost Rider. Instead of a cool motorcycle, he rides a flaming mammoth.
- Later, the first Moon Knight also joined, who was initially an enemy of the first Avenger. He is a caveman who worshiped the god Konshu and thus became the Moon Knight.
As one would expect from the great stories of Marvel, the first Avengers also fought alongside the modern variants. The biggest enemy in this was probably Mephisto. Over time, they also battled various time travelers such as Dr. Doom and Thanos.
Will we ever see them on the big screen? As a major film, it seems quite unlikely since they want to further establish the well-known heroes. However, as cameos in a big multiverse story, anything is possible.
One could also reasonably imagine seeing this version of the Avengers in a series or short episode in formats like What if?. But these are all just possibilities.
