Dead by Daylight will soon release the “Archives” feature. At least Cortyn is very excited about it because there are many new contents.
The last patch of Dead by Daylight, which brought the Demogorgon into the game, was several weeks ago. In just a few days, the Halloween event will be upon us, along with a new patch that will bring a feature announced months ago – the Archives.
What are the Archives? The Archives of Dead by Daylight can enable several things. They include:
- New tasks and missions for the game
- Unlocking cosmetic items and blood points
- Expanding the story and background of the game
This is achieved through two different areas in the Archives. The so-called “Tomes” (tomes or books) and the “Rifts”.
What are the Tomes? The Tomes set the theme for the current narrative. For example, it is possible that Tomes focus primarily on the background of one or two characters. So, anyone who wants to learn more about the past of Claudette, Jake, the Trapper, or the Nurse will find information in the Tomes. However, these lore snippets are not immediately available. You have to unlock them through various tasks.
Each Tome has several levels (currently 4), which are gradually unlocked at intervals of 2 weeks. Each level contains a variety of tasks to complete. Some tasks are simpler, while others are more complex. For example, a mission might be to repair a total of 3 generators. A more complex mission would require capturing 2 survivors in a bear trap as the Trapper while using a specific perk.
As a reward for completing the missions, not only do you unlock the next task, but you also receive blood points and Rift Fragments. The fragments are important for unlocking further rewards.
How often will new content be released? The developers currently plan to expand the Archives with each “Mid-Chapter Patch” and release at least one Tome along with the corresponding Rift. This would mean that new content appears approximately every 3 months, although the Rifts themselves are only active for 70 days. There would be waiting times of 2-3 weeks between the Rifts.
What is a Rift? Along with each Tome, a Rift also enters the game. It is a path with 70 individual steps, on which you progress slowly. At certain levels, you unlock new cosmetic items. These can be brand new outfits or color variations of already existing items.
You can make progress on a Rift in several ways:
- Completing missions in the corresponding Tome
- Completing matches (through earned XP)
New are the “Charms,” a new type of cosmetic item. Survivors can wear these at their hips or killer can use them to decorate their hooks. The charms often relate to the story of the current Tome.
The Archives also come with the Halloween event!
More Unlocks for Premium Players
Anyone who wants can buy a Rift Pass for 1,000 Auric Cells. This is approximately equivalent to 10€. This will additionally unlock a path with premium rewards on top of the rewards available for free, also spread across 70 levels.
The progress on both paths is parallel. So if you have already unlocked all 70 levels in the “free” path and then buy the Rift Pass, you will unlock all premium rewards immediately.
Especially cool: You can completely recover the costs of 1,000 Auric Cells through the premium path. So, if you buy a Rift Pass and play diligently, you will accumulate enough currency to buy the next Rift Pass a few months later. This is reminiscent of “Battle Pass” features from other games, such as Fortnite.
Regular players only need to invest once 10€ to unlock all cosmetics and other rewards in the Archives.
How long does it take to unlock everything? The developers state that they created the Rift with the thought that an average player should be able to unlock everything. This assumes a playtime of 1 hour per day. If someone plays a total of 70 hours over the duration of a Rift of 70 days and completes a few missions from the Tome, they should be able to unlock everything.
Unlocking also possible with cash: If you don’t have enough time but still want a certain reward, you can also unlock the individual ranks with Auric Cells. Each of the 70 levels then costs 100 Auric Cells (or 1€ per level). However, you would probably only do this in emergencies since it could get expensive otherwise. For frequent players, this should not even be an option.
Cortyn says: For me, the Archives with the Rifts and Tomes are perfect. I have now reached a state where every character can do everything for me, and unlocks have little value unless I need new addons. With story content, many new cosmetics, and regular new unlocks, the Archives provide me enough incentive to regularly dive into Dead by Daylight.
After the demise of Evolve, Dead by Daylight has become a game for me that provides a quite intense gaming experience where I want to know more and more about the world and the characters. I think it’s great that this is finally being implemented and also available to frequent players at a comparatively small price.
However, it remains to be seen whether the developers can actually keep up with cosmetics and whether they don’t run the risk of becoming too silly – as that would not be good for the game.
Are you looking forward to the Archives?
