The House Baratheon is one of the most important noble houses in Game of Thrones. But which Baratheon was actually the most powerful in the history of Westeros? MeinMMO has selected the 8 strongest members for you.
What is House Baratheon? House Baratheon is one of the great houses of Westeros. Since Aegon’s Conquest, they have ruled over the Stormlands south of King’s Landing. Their seat is Storm’s End, and their motto is “Ours is the Fury”.
The sigil of the house shows a black stag on a golden field. After the coronation of Robert Baratheon, he divided the land among himself and his two brothers, creating three bloodlines:
- House Baratheon of King’s Landing: Rulers of the Crownlands, founded by Robert Baratheon
- House Baratheon of Dragonstone: Rulers of Dragonstone, founded by Stannis Baratheon
- House Baratheon of Storm’s End: Rulers of Storm’s End and the Stormlands, founded by Renly Baratheon
What criteria were used for the ranking? Strength and power can naturally look very different. In the ranking, we primarily assess based on: political power, strength in battle, popularity, and influence on history. We also only looked at characters who were explicitly born as Baratheon. That means:
- no bastards (like Gendry)
- no married-in Baratheons
- no alleged Baratheons (like Joffrey, Tommen, and Myrcella).
Spoiler warning: Events from Game of Thrones are spoiled. Spoilers for A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms are hidden separately, so you don’t have to worry here.
Rank 8: Stormbreaker
Almost nothing is known about “Stormbreaker”, a legendary knight from House Baratheon. We don’t even know his first name. It is said that he always brought glory to his house. His deeds must have been very impressive. At least, his name is mentioned in the same breath as Lyonel Baratheon, whom we will encounter later on this list.
What makes the character truly special is his backstory. In fact, there is an officially supported text-based online role-playing game by George R.R. Martin, which has existed since the publication of the first books. The website (Westeros.org) was founded by two fans, Elio Miguel García Jr. and Linda Maria Antonsson. The two had such enormous knowledge about the world of Westeros that they worked as official “fact-checkers” for Martin, and later also became co-authors for the book “Westeros – The World of Ice and Fire”. In this book, Stormbreaker is mentioned. They pay tribute to a longtime friend and collaborator who embodied the character Ser Sarmion “Stormbreaker” Baratheon in the online role-playing game.
Rank 7: Raymond Baratheon
Not much is known about Ser Raymond Baratheon either. He was the younger son in his branch of the family, and thus had no prospect of inheriting land or titles. Therefore, he became a member of the Kingsguard of King Aenys I. Targaryen, long before the time of “Game of Thrones” and “House of the Dragon”.
In his role as a knight, he did very well and gained glory primarily by saving his king’s life. At that time, there was great tension between House Targaryen and the Faith of the Seven, which did not tolerate the incestuous relationships of the ruling family. Two members of the “Poor Fellows”, a religious military order, broke into the king’s chamber to permanently remove him from the way. Fortunately, Ser Raymond was present and was able to prevent the assassination with swift action.
