The Division 2 – the USA in ruins
This is The Division 2 (PC, PS4, Xbox One): It is a coop and cover shooter set in a devastated USA – full of symbols, as the once proud nation lies in ruins and tatters. The agents head to Washington to restore order.
The Division 2 is supposed to be the evolution of the first part – in which players experienced the direct effects of a global plague in New York. The Division 1 underwent a strong transformation and became a much stronger game than at launch over two years and with numerous patches.
How has the development been so far? Allegedly, Ubisoft began developing The Division 2 in 2016 – right after it became clear what a hit the first part would be.
However, The Division 2 was kept under wraps for a long time, and even after the announcement, only little was known. Only now in 2019 is the information slowly coming out about what fans can expect. These are probably not big jumps, but only detail improvements compared to the first part.
The Division 2 is a mega project: dozens of studios from all over the world are working on The Division 2. More than 1000 developers are supposed to be involved.
This is The Division 2 at its best: A game that has learned from the mistakes of its predecessor. At best, it is a polished cover shooter with a motivating loot system, a great atmosphere, and strong progression.
Massive now actually knows what went wrong in the first part and they say all the right things about what they want to improve in The Division 2. Now they just need to implement it.
This is The Division 2 at its worst: In the worst case, they have not managed the progression systems, and it lacks long-term motivation. We currently know little about the endgame and the systems.
This is the point where Destiny 2 also failed. In the attempt to improve and polish such a game, many of the appealing features could be lost.
What to expect in 2019 in The Division 2: The first open tests will already be on February 7. A Private Beta starts.
The release is then already on March 15. So, that is a “sure thing” for 2019.
There will also be DLCs, which will be free for The Division 2. This is one of the lessons learned from part 1.
