Crowfall – a PvP MMORPG, but rethought
This is Crowfall (PC): Crowfall is an MMORPG that incorporates elements from strategy games. Players are supposed to start new campaigns repeatedly, which have a clearly defined time frame and eventually end. This way there should be winners and losers in an MMORPG.
This is how the development has been so far: Crowfall is the attempt of MMORPG veterans to steer the genre in a different direction than WoW. Development has been slow because the developers are taking their time with their project.
They have earned additional money through smart decisions, changed a lot in May 2017, and postponed the release to incorporate additional features and make it perfect.
This has led to numerous delays. From the outside, there was little visible progress. However, recently there have been positive signals regarding the MMORPG. It seems like they are making good progress now.
This is Crowfall at its best: Ideally, it is a “rethought” PvP MMORPG, where the campaigns give it a special flair. Crowfall has the potential to become a successful niche game that finds its fans. The MMORPG experiments with some bold ideas and could bring fresh air into the genre.
This is Crowfall at its worst: In the worst case, it simply appeals to too few people and Crowfall remains under the radar of genre fans. Crowfall will live off of an active and passionate community. Whether they find each other and promote their game will remain to be seen.
Currently, Crowfall is only slowly entering the phase where they seek contact with new players. At the moment, they prefer to keep to themselves and only cater to the small circle of backers who are already enthusiastic about Crowfall. It will be interesting to see how this develops when Crowfall reaches the public.
What is planned for Crowfall in 2019: The last years seemed to be nothing but planning for Crowfall, only to then throw everything overboard.
Currently, they are still in pre-alpha 5.8. The alpha will then become 6.0 – and then comes the beta. When Crowfall will be “really” released is still up in the air. But it should at least be playable in 2019, so we can take a clear look at it.
It seems like Crowfall has enough funding through the licensing of MMO technology and does not need to rush a release. Crowfall knows how important the launch is and wants to make optimal use of it.
