Gran Saga
What kind of game is this? Gran Saga is an anime MMORPG being developed in Unreal Engine 4. The huge game world is divided into various zones, similar to what you see in ESO or Guild Wars 2.
You take on the role of one of 6 playable characters, with plans to continuously expand that number. With these, you can wield different weapons, adapting your playstyle.
In Gran Saga, you can expect many quests, action-packed battles with automatic targeting, and exploration of the world on foot or horseback.
What makes it interesting? Gran Saga places great emphasis on story and also offers a very exciting weapon system:
- Depending on which weapon your hero wields, their playstyle changes, and the MMORPG should feel different.
- There are over 20 weapons in the game, each offering unique attacks and defenses, as well as their own skills and unique appearances.
- Weapons are meant to become a type of companion that you continuously upgrade. While switching is possible, you mainly work on upgrading your weapon.
Developer NPIXEL is also working on several new mobile MMORPGs, including Chrono Odyssey.
This is Gran Saga at best: A mobile MMO with a strong JRPG story and many quests in various instantiated zones. Visually, it resembles Genshin Impact and could finally become the MMORPG hit in China.
In addition to focusing on the story, the weapon system sounds interesting and sets it somewhat apart from other mobile MMORPGs.
However, it is already known that the game relies on autoplay and features a gacha system. This could theoretically be adjusted at the worldwide release. The publishing is also managed by Kakao Games.
This is Gran Saga at worst: A beautiful MMORPG that, however, due to its gacha mechanics and autoplay, does not offer any real gameplay enjoyment.
Already after the release in Korea, there were some English-speaking YouTubers who criticized the game. Koolio Gaming, who tries many Asian and mobile games, called it the “best-looking auto-MMO” (via YouTube).
Will the game also be available for PC? Yes, the game was also released for PC in Korea.
