Final Fantasy XI
In 2002, the long-lasting RPG series Final Fantasy made the leap into a persistent online world with the eleventh installment of the series.
A standout feature of the MMO is group content. While it is possible to do things alone in many online role-playing games, Final Fantasy XI requires a group for almost every activity. Interaction with other players is of utmost importance.
Furthermore, there are no regional servers, which is why you always encounter players from other countries. Additionally, the MMO offers quests, a large game world, and plenty of battles against creatures known from the Final Fantasy series. Several add-ons continually expanded the game and introduced new content.
Even though the MMORPG has been surpassed by its successor Final Fantasy XIV today, Final Fantasy XI is considered a milestone in MMORPG history.
Of course, there were several other MMORPGs that were released before Blizzard’s World of Warcraft. However, those mentioned here significantly contributed to defining the genre.
