Jumpgate
The space MMORPG Jumpgate started in 2001 and revolved around players needing to traverse jump gates to travel through the universe. Players had to explore space, fight enemies, research, create items, trade, and also engage in mining. The game was played from the pilot’s perspective, sitting in the cockpit of a spaceship. This ship could be improved and upgraded over time.
In later gameplay, it was possible to acquire your own space stations and place them in space. This allowed for even greater involvement in the economy. One could say that Jumpgate was a forerunner to EVE Online, as the flow of goods played an important role. Jumpgate was discontinued in 2012. The planned successor, Jumpgate: Evolution, was never released.
