
Ultima Online
In 1997, Ultima Online was released as an expansion of the very successful single-player series Ultima. Richard “Lord British” Garriott wanted to offer fans a persistent online world where they could follow their own path.
Basically, there are no quests, and great importance is placed on players being self-sufficient. Since it is lucrative to be a merchant or craftsman and one can even run their own shops in towns, many players feel more comfortable in these professions than exploring the world as adventurers. This is dangerous anyway, as on the Felucca server, any player can be attacked and robbed by other players at any time.
Ultima Online is still active today and underwent many changes through numerous add-ons that expanded the game world. However, the isometric 2D graphics feel outdated today.Later this year, a free-to-play version will launch.
